New solar panels with battery storage units have been installed at Charlbury Community Centre - funded through a local grant made possible by Sustainable Charlbury. Grants are funded from revenues generated by the Southill Community Energy solar farm.
That means:
⚡ Lower energy bills
🌱 Lower carbon emissions
💚 More support for community activities
The panels will help cut carbon emissions and reduce energy bills for the building, meaning more resources can go back into the community centre for activities we all value.
The new installation will cover more than 60% of the Community Centre’s energy use over 12 months and up to 75% in summer. Estimated savings are a 70 percent reduction to the annual electricity bill!
A handy digital display shows the new system’s energy performance available for everyone to see, located near reception in the café and library area.

You may have noticed that a cherry tree next to the playground at Ticknell Piece has recently been felled.
This followed advice from Oxfordshire County Council’s Tree Service, who assessed the tree and found it to be in poor structural condition, with a split between its stems. Given how close it was to the playground, the recommendation was that it should be removed promptly for safety reasons.
As the site is within a conservation area, the Town Council submitted the required 5-day notice to West Oxfordshire District Council before the work was carried out.
Where possible, the timber has been left on site to provide habitat for wildlife.
At its meeting this week, the Town Council also discussed planting a replacement tree in due course.

Fancy a day out in Birmingham? A coach will leave the Spendlove Centre at 9am on Friday 17 April. We will arrive Birmingham with plenty of time to visit its glorious library and Art Gallery before lunch. At 2.15pm we sit down to a concert by the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. We aim to be back in Charlbury by 6pm (ish) depending on traffic. Cost £50 (a bargain) to include coach travel and concert ticket. First come, first served.

📚✨ World Book Day Readathon – Community Update & Thank You! ✨📚
We're delighted to share the fantastic results from Charlbury Primary's World Book Day Readathon!
Our pupils collectively read a staggering 34,048 minutes — that’s 567 hours of reading!
They read with dedication and enthusiasm in the lead up to, and all day long on World Book Day. On WBD itself, we were lucky to welcome special guests from the wider Charlbury Community including Jason from the Community Centre and Bryanna from Youth Club who generously gave their time and shared favourite books. Our students loved hearing from them.
Thanks to this amazing effort, together with the generous support of families and you, our community, the Readathon has raised over £1,600. This will go directly towards resources and opportunities that help our children’s learning. 🌱✨
A huge thank you to everyone who encouraged, sponsored, and celebrated reading with us. Your support truly makes a difference! 💙📖

Would you like to be more involved with the Charlbury community?
Interested in shaping future plans for the Community Centre?
Thomas Gifford Trust, which owns and manages Charlbury Community Centre, is looking for two new trustees.
All trustees meet every 2 months (on a Wednesday at 8pm) and are responsible for both the forward-looking strategic decisions about the running of the Community Centre, and also the ongoing management of the trust.
We invite any member of our community to get involved. We aim to provide something for people of all ages and with diverse interests so it is important that we ensure the trustees are representative of our area as a whole. Younger adults are encouraged to join us at this time and note that the time commitment is not too demanding alongside work and / or family. It is a rewarding role, and you will receive a warm welcome.
Keen to help Charlbury move towards net zero?
We're looking for someone who will focus on environmental issues relating to the community centre, specifically our ambition to reach net zero. We would like to maximise energy efficiency following installation of our new solar panels.
Can you help us get the word out about all that the Community Centre has to offer?
Come help us with social media and communications! We are also looking for someone who can keep Charlbury informed about what we’re doing, let people know about new classes, sessions and events, and who can encourage community members who have never been in to come and explore what’s happening at the Centre.
If you want to learn more about what may be involved, please get in touch with Chris Potts, Chair of TG Trust (message or call 07765 242315) or Daniela Jenkins, Executive Manager (07979 706090).
We look forward to meeting all interested community members!

The Government is consulting on proposals to reorganise local government in Oxfordshire, and Charlbury Town Council will be submitting a response. Before doing so, we would like to understand residents’ views.
At present most local services are delivered by two tiers of council above town and parish councils:
Oxfordshire County Council – highways, schools, social care, libraries etc
District councils (West Oxfordshire District Council) – planning, waste, housing, environment etc
The proposals would replace these with unitary authorities that deliver all services. Charlbury Town Council would continue to exist under all options.
Three proposals are currently under consultation:
One Oxfordshire Council – a single council covering the whole county (population around 800,000)
www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/oneoxfordshire
Two Councils – two medium-sized councils, each serving around 500,000 residents
Three Councils – three smaller councils covering Northern Oxfordshire, Greater Oxford and Ridgeway
www.oxford.gov.uk/three-councils
Importantly, the Government consultation does not ask councils or residents to choose between the proposals. Instead, the same set of questions must be answered for each proposal.
To help inform the Town Council’s response, please take a few minutes to complete our short survey:
The survey takes around 3 minutes to complete and will close ahead of the Extraordinary Meeting of Charlbury Town Council on 18 March at 12 noon, when the Council will agree its response
You can also respond directly to the Government consultation here:
https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/local-government-reorganisation-in-oxfordshire
Thank you for helping the Town Council understand residents’ views.

To mark the implementation of Oxfordshire’s 275th 20mph scheme, Oxfordshire residents can apply for free wheelie bin stickers to remind motorists to stick to the lower limit.
After launching its 20mph programme in 2022, Oxfordshire County Council has been working with parish and town councils around the county to bring in lower limits in places where parish and town councils request them.
To celebrate the latest milestone, and support these schemes, the council has joined forces with the national 20’s Plenty for Us campaign group to give out free wheelie bin stickers to Oxfordshire residents who want to support their local 20mph scheme.
To apply for stickers, people can visit the 20’s Plenty webpage https://www.20splenty.org/oxon_wbs .
Each household can apply for up to 10 stickers to get the message across that 20mph is plenty in residential areas.

As Town Clerk, I regularly receive messages asking me to report things like potholes, broken street lights, graffiti, fly-tipping, blocked gullies, dog fouling, dead trees/branches or other problems around town.
While I’m always happy to help, these reports are made through FixMyStreet — and anyone can report directly in just a couple of minutes.
In fact, it’s usually better coming straight from the person who has spotted the issue. You can:
Pinpoint the exact location on the map
Upload a photo
Add the detail while it’s fresh
Track updates directly
If you send it to me or the Town Council, I simply log it on FixMyStreet on your behalf — which adds an extra step.
FixMyStreet is designed for reporting things that are broken, dirty, damaged or dumped and need fixing, cleaning or clearing — such as:
Potholes
Street lights not working
Graffiti
Dog fouling
Fly-tipping
Tree issues
If something isn’t covered under FixMyStreet, it will be redirected to the appropriate organisation.
You can report here:
www.fixmystreet.com
Of course, if something is urgent, please do contact me. But where possible, reporting directly helps issues get to the right authority more quickly.
Thank you — it really does make a difference.

Join Charlbury Finstock Morris!
Morris dancing is more than just hanky-waving and whacking one another with sticks. It is participating in and maintaining an ancient English custom; it is learning different dance traditions and local history and sharing that with interested audiences; it is camaraderie with people who share your interest; it is beer-drinking (mostly real ale, and cider for at least one of us); and above all, it is good exercise. (Haven't you been telling yourself you need more of that—and we are not just talking about hoisting pints.)
We are always looking for interested individuals from the local community to join our band of merry men*. Our dancers hail from Chipping Norton to west of Oxford and all points in between. No experience is necessary—we provide teaching usually Friday evenings in Finstock.
Should you seek some lively exercise or feel the urge to be doing something really different while entertaining others with your dance or musical talent do consider joining Charlbury Finstock Morris. Contact our bagman Peter (the chap fourth from the left at the back in the picture) via info@charlburymorris.org.uk or even just stop by at one of our practice sessions listed here: Link
*As you will have noticed from the photos, in keeping with the older Morris customs Charlbury Morris is an all male side. Of course we have have a dedicated ‛support staff’ of spouses and partners, but if you wish to dance in a mixed side we highly recommend Charlbury's other Morris side, Wychwayz Border Morris.
We currently have some spaces in our Beaver colony in Charlbury. We meet on a Thursday 5pm - 6.15pm in term time at the Scout Hut. Open to 6 - 8 year olds. If you'd like more information or for your child to come and visit, do get in touch.
