Charlbury Town FC's Keith Claridge honoured by local FA

The Oxford Mail writes:

"When Keith Claridge started his love affair with his town football team, the sporting landscape was a different world... Mr Claridge, 69, started playing for the club's boys' team aged 15 in the Witney and District Minor League in 1960. The self-employed decorator, who works with his wife Janette, was given the Doug Margetts Award, handed out by Witney and District FA for long service."

Charlbury Museum News August 1914

On 28th August 1914 HMS Laurel, a two-funnel torpedo boat destroyer built by White's of Cowes, was attacked and badly damaged during the Battle of Heligoland. On board, a Charlbury man, Chief Stoker/Petty Officer, was seriously wounded. With a colleague he put out a fire near the second gun which threatened nearby lyddite shells, an act for which they were both later awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.

In 2014, to learn more, visit the Museum on Friday or Saturday 29th/30th August 10 am to 12 noon, or Sunday 31st August 2.30 - 4.30 pm.

Charlbury Library

From Monday 18 August volunteers will be helping to keep Charlbury Library open. Volunteers will be responsible for running the library on Monday mornings and afternoons and on Friday mornings. On Wednesday afternoons a volunteer will be assisting the library manager.
Please remember to bring your library card with you if you want to borrow books. Volunteers will not have access to the library service computer and will not be able to issue or reserve books. The self-service machine will be in operation to issue or renew books using a library card and the public computers will be available as usual.
Volunteers are not allowed to issue DVDs because of legal restrictions to do with the age of borrowers and the suitability of the material. DVDs can only be issued when the library manager is present, i.e. on Wednesday afternoon and evening, Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
There are bound to be some problems at first as we get used to the new arrangements. Please be patient and give the volunteers your support.

Solar Power for Charlbury Primary School

The Low Carbon Hub, a social enterprise based in Oxford, have teamed up with Charlbury Primary School to install 24kW of solar PV panels on the south east facing school roofs. The solar panels will generate enough electricity to power an average of 5 UK households, saving approximately 10 tonnes of CO2 per year. The installation is expecting to be up and running by the end of next week (22nd August) and in time for the new school year. The Low Carbon Hub have funded the project and will be providing discounted green electricity to the school. Charlbury Remembers - Witney Video

Charlbury Remembers - Witney Video
A moving service of Commemoration held last Sunday at the Railway station, remembering the soldiers of the First World War with poems and songs. Singing along with the choir were about 200 people lining the platforms.
Teresa Ceesay the Cotswold Line Station Manager came out of her retirement, just the previous Friday, to take charge of the station for the two trains that arrived.
Here's a link to the Witney TV video of the service-

New Menu at The Bull

The late summer / autumn menu is now available at The Bull Inn, with some really yummy dishes available. Calves Liver and Bacon is back by popular demand, along with plenty of other varied choices including four traditional pub classics. We haven't tried the puddings yet, but they look fabulous, particularly the Chocolate Mousse with Peanut Butter Caramel! All very reasonably priced and offering excellent value for money. We will look forward to seeing you soon.

Dreamcatcher Workshop at Wilderness

FEATHERS
I'm planning to run a dreamcatcher workshop at the Wilderness festival this Saturday to raise funds for the Charlbury Community Centre project. As decoration I need lots of feathers. I would be very grateful if anyone is out and about tomorrow and could drop any feathers they collect to White Hart Cottage (under the arch opposite Burford road turning). If I'm not there please put a bag by the door next to the quince.
WOOL
I also require colourful wool so if you have any spare and would be happy to donate it that would be marvellous! :-)

World War One Commemoration Event at the Railway Station

On the evening of Sunday 3 August, a very moving World War One Commemoration event took place at Charlbury Railway Station. There were war songs, along with poetry and readings on platform 2 where poppies had been planted in the spring and were now in full bloom. Many Charlbury residents filled platform 1 to witness this event and sing along in memory of the 50 Charlbury soldiers who never returned
