Alison Cherry walks for Hospice

I am going to take part in A Hospice Midnight Walk in Midsummer on Saturday 28 July.

I will be walking 6 miles around Banbury Town and hope to raise as much money as I can for The Katharine House Hospice at Adderbury.

WODC benefit prosecution

From a WODC press release:

West Oxfordshire District Council has successfully prosecuted a Charlbury man on three charges of failing to promptly notify relevant changes in his circumstances in order to obtain benefits.

David Knight, 52, of Ticknell Piece Road, Charlbury, pleaded guilty at Banbury Magistrates’ Court on 20 April 2007 and narrowly escaped a prison sentence for fraudulently obtaining Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit and also Income Support totalling £20,275.40.

He was given a four month prison sentence, suspended for two years and a four month tagging curfew order which will take immediate effect. The Council will seek to recover the full amount of Housing and Council Tax Benefit which has been fraudulently obtained. The Department for Work and Pensions will seek to recover the full amount of the Income Support which has been fraudulently obtained.

Jon Dearing, Head of Revenues at West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “Benefit Fraud is a crime against every resident of West Oxfordshire. If you know someone who is committing benefit fraud please contact the Benefit Fraud Hotline on 01993 861234 or contact the Council via the website www.westoxon.gov.uk. We treat all calls and correspondence in confidence.”

Peter Finch - London Marathon - Sponsorship

Police update

Thames Valley Police's latest update for the Charlbury area:

“Ten crimes have been recorded over the past month, the same as the month before; these include three counts of criminal damage and one of shoplifting.

“Alcohol has been seized from underage youths over recent weekends and, as a follow up, letters have been sent to their parents to let them know.

“To all you mini moto riders! Parents are you aware that full documentation is required when these vehicles are used on the road and public places? Leaflets are available through the police office at The Spendlove Centre.”

Nominations close for District Council election

One of the two seats in Charlbury & Finstock ward, West Oxfordshire District Council, will be up for election on Thursday March 3rd. This seat is currently held by Mike Breakell (LibDem).

The candidates are:

  • Mike Breakell (Liberal Democrat), Well Cottage, 4 High Street, Finstock OX7 3BY
  • Gill Hill (Conservative), The Old Farm, Asthall Leigh, Witney OX29 9PX
  • Harriet Marshall (Green), Evenlode Cottage, The Bank, Fawler OX7 3AQ

The other seat is held by Charlbury resident Glena Chadwick (LibDem). This seat will come up for election in 2008.

Celebrate St Georges Day with Charlbury Beer Festival

You've been to the Beer Festival, you danced at St Patricks Night and you laughed at the Panto (oh yes you did!) and so we have another event for you.

We will be enjoying ourselves at the Memorial Hall on the 21st April at 7:30pm, with some comedy, a good old Cockney Sing-a-long, Real Ale (of course), wine, Pasty & Chips and an exciting 8 piece band called "OUCH!", playing all your favourite old dance and rock classics, with dancing 'til 11:30.

LibDem candidate selected

Charlbury, Finstock and Fawler Liberal Democrats are pleased to announce that Cllr Mike Breakell has been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the District Council Elections on Thursday 3rd May. Mike has served the residents of Charlbury, Finstock and Fawler on West Oxfordshire District Council since 2002.
