Wanted - Governors for Charlbury School

Vacancy
At the end of this academic year (July), we have vacancies arising for people who are interested in the educational side of school and are willing to join us on the governing body and the standards and curriculum committee. An interest in special needs children and/or the delivering of the whole school curriculum would be an advantage but not essential.

The time commitment to the school is to 5 full governing body meetings per annum, held between 6-8pm on varying weekday evenings and to 5 Committee meetings which precede the full meetings. There are also termly monitoring visits in relation to the specific curriculum role assigned. Another 1-2 ad hoc meetings on matters arising or sub-committees are also not unusual. There is an amount of preparation time for such meetings and Governors are expected to come into school during term-time from time to time on visits in association with their role and to share the joy of the children.

Applications are welcome from parents and non-parents - we wish to maintain the correct balance on the Governing Body of all stakeholders of our community. I as Chair of Governors and the headteacher, Jane Holt, would be more than happy to discuss the position further with anyone who may be interested in taking up the role.

I can be contacted at kaye@freegratis.net or 07813 015034.
Kaye Leggett
Chair of Governors, Charlbury Primary School

By way of preamble....
Charlbury School has 13 members on the Governing Body (including Clerk and Associates) who are drawn from parents, staff members, the local authority and our community. We are diverse in age range, background and skills. Our role is to ensure high standards of achievement for all the children in the school by:
• Setting the school's vision, ethos and strategic direction;
• Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and the children; and
• Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

Southill's sunny seven

After a drab and wet March and April, May has delivered some much needed sunshine. Southill Solar has just had it's best (by far) 7 days of continuous sunshine, with yesterday's sun setting (over in Suffolk!) after a glorious 201MWh of green electricity generation.

Time to party

Charlbury Community Centre is a great space to hold children's parties. We can offer, for example, an hour in the sports hall (set up for whichever sport you prefer, supervised by us or by you) followed by an hour in the Thomas Gifford room, where children can have some food, or do quieter activities. You can provide the food yourself or we can arrange for caterers to do it for you. Please contact Jenny at jenny@charlburycommunitycentre.org.uk for details and to find out about prices and availability.

GWR Meet the Manager session at Charlbury station

GWR is holding a Meet the Manager event at Charlbury station on Tuesday, May 22, from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, to give passengers the opportunity to ask questions about recent problems affecting services on the Cotswold Line and what steps GWR is taking to deal with them.

There will also be information about forthcoming changes to services over the rest of this year, including resignalling work at Oxford in July, the introduction of more new IET trains, work to extend platforms at stations during the autumn and a revised timetable from January next year.

If people cannot get to this event, there will be another Meet the Manager session at Oxford station on Thursday, May 24, also from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, and several others at stations further west along the line. See clpg.org.uk for these dates.

Charlbury Medical Centre update

The GPs and staff of the Charlbury Medical Centre and the Charlbury Patient Participation Group (PPG) are grateful to patients for their understanding during a recent period of particular pressure experienced by the Surgery.

We now bring good news that the pressure has eased (as much as pressure can ease for any small but busy Practice like ours, which the town is lucky to have).

Patients will be pleased to hear that Dr Kate McIntyre, BSc, MBBS, DRCOG, MRCGP, Dip Pall Med, will be joining the Practice in July to more than fill the gap in available GP hours left when Dr Golder moved away. From July the Practice will be able to offer 30 more appointments than was possible previously.

The Practice is also currently looking to recruit another GP to join the team. In the meantime the Practice has the support of a locum doctor.

Interesting times for the Practice and for patients! All the more reason to come along to the PPG's informal Open Door and Coffee Morning at the Medical Centre on Saturday, 9 June from 10.00 a.m. to 12 noon. PPG members and the Practice Manager will be present to tell you more about the Practice and to answer questions. This will also be an opportunity to give your views on "What works well?" and "Anything you would like to change?"

Charlbury Street Fair 2018 – Seeking Key Volunteers

Preparations are well in hand for our 2018 Street Fair but we are finding that we do need a couple of extra pairs of hands in the run up to September.

One is ideally a person competent in InDesign software to collate the details, edit and arrange for printing of our programme leaflet, also to produce posters for advertising the event.

Another is someone to manage the CSF website updating details and generally performing 'housekeeping'.

The work is not onerous I anticipate a few hours in June/ July for the leaflet and a couple of hours for the posters, and help and support will be given to anyone volunteering.

In the longer term, as Hannen Beith our stalwart Secretary is standing down after this year's event, we will very much welcome a volunteer with good administrative skills to join us. Between Hannen and myself we would ideally like to arrange a handover September/ October time so we can start the 2019 arrangements smoothly!

If interested do contact us via charlburystreetfair.org/contact-us/

Thanks!

LOST PROPERTY AT THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Since the Community Centre first opened in September we have had a huge number of lost property items left behind which have never been reclaimed. These items have included many really good quality sweaters, hoodies and t shirts, water bottles, cycle helmets, sun glasses, plus much more. We have realised that we need a protocol to deal with all this property.

From now on ordinary items, such as those detailed above, will be kept for 14 days only, but can be reclaimed from the Community Centre reception on any day during that time.

Valuable items such as watches, jewellery, expensive racquets and bats etc will be kept for 28 days, but will require identification such as a driving license or passport in order to reclaim them.

Every week, between 1.00pm and 5.00 pm on a Wednesday afternoon, unclaimed items which have gone beyond the above time limits will be displayed near the reception desk at the Community Centre and can be purchased for a nominal sum. After this all items which are unclaimed or unsold will be given to charity.

We are very much hoping that by advertising these facts, more people who use the Centre and who lose property will make a point of checking to see if it has been handed in to us. We would love to reunite many more lost items with their owners!

Southill Solar has generated 29372 kWh today

Southill Community Energy was delighted to show over 20 people round the solar farm today, some of them doing the boundary walk, others on our shorter walk to the farm only. And of course we visited our bees. Needless to say, the sun is going great guns for us, and today alone we have saved 16,566 kg of CO2.

Charlbury Character Assessment - preserving the town’s character and history

A team of local volunteers has assessed every street and open space within Charlbury and its surrounding countryside, to record the character and features of the parish. This work was drawn together by a heritage expert to create a draft Character Assessment of Charlbury.

The report will inform the Charlbury Neighbourhood Plan, which will include a section on the protection and conservation of Charlbury's fine heritage of buildings and landscapes, along with policies to conserve and enhance Charlbury's character and appearance.

It will also be used by the Town Council and the Charlbury Conservation Area Advisory Committee when responding to planning applications.

We would like to give everyone living in Charlbury an opportunity to comment on the Character Assessment report before it is finalised, so that we can be sure it has captured everything about the historic character of the town and its surrounding landscape that is important to local people.

You can see the report online at www.charlburyneighbourhoodforum.org.uk

Printed copies are available in the library, the Corner House and the Deli. (Please note that only the library has the full version with assessments of every street, this is due to the size of the document).

You can respond by email to charassescharl@gmail.com or by completing a form in the library and dropping it into the postbox next to the Reference and Local Studies shelf.

Please send us your comments by the end of May.

CRAG's most successful season yet!

We've helped some desperate people, thanks to you!

Since last September, Charlbury Refugee Action Group has raised £12,500. Here's how you helped raise the money between us, and where it has gone.

Over £7000 came from the Tea Concerts. The Christmas Art Café brought in £575, the Bring and Buy £920, Churches Together in Together raised £150, Charlbury Quakers donated £163, and personal donations totalled £1114. And we've just added £475 from the SE Asian supper evening organised by Gene Teo Cooke.

Our online donation page enables supporters to make their own donations straight to Help Refugees, with the added advantage that you can add Gift Aid. Individual donations on that page since September 1st have totalled £3175, to which people have added £180 in Gift Aid.

So far we have sent £7071 of what we have raised to the charity Help Refugees (who support dozens of voluntary relief programmes across Europe, but especially in Greece and in the Calais and Paris regions of France) and a further £3800 to the charity Refugee Community Kitchen who provide hot meals for well over a thousand refugees daily sleeping rough in the Calais area and (appallingly) on the streets of Paris.

Thank you so much to all of you who have helped.

Now please keep in touch. It costs you nothing!

Like all other organisations, however small, Charlbury Refugee Action Group has to conform to new regulations governing the information we hold on members and supporters, and how and if we may contact you. We have emailed all members already with a link that enables you to sign up afresh, and the form explains exactly what we shall do with the data we hold and how you can see it and correct it for yourself.

But perhaps you haven't seen it? Whether you are an existing member re-joining, or a newcomer to CRAG, here's where you go: www.eepurl.com/dstDGT

Everything is explained on the form, including how you can unsubscribe any time you want.

Welcome aboard!
