Incident in early hours of Thursday morning
What happened was that at approx 1.00 a.m we were woken and could hear loud banging on our front door. l looked out of the bedroom window to see two young men in hoodies across the road near Hill Close who seemed to be laid in the grass near a small tree and could hear someone else who was banging our front door. I went to the front door and could see something lent against the front door through a glass window in the top of the door. At this point I went back upstairs and shone a torch across the road at the two men who were opposite and at this point the three of these people ran off up the Slade towards Dancers Hill. What was laid against our door was a house for sale type sign which was advertising the forthcoming Wychwood Fair.
I did not open the front door last night but removed the sign this morning. I did call 999 and informed the police but heard nothing from the police following the call. Very scary incident. If you can relay this horror story to the wider community so that they can be aware.

Rogue traders
On the 16/8/18 there was an incident involving rouge traders and an elderly resident in the Nine Acres area.
The resident was pressured into having a small amount of work done for a large amount of money.
Police are asking all residents to be vigilant and keep an eye on the more elderly and vulnerable residents in the area.
They will often cold call on vulnerable households and deliberately overcharge for unsatisfactory goods and services. This can include charging for unnecessary work, damaging property deliberately in order to obtain money, leaving work unfinished and intimidating householders
Victims of this practice are often vulnerable or elderly and in the most serious cases, offenders will return to the same victim again and again until their savings are exhausted
Police work jointly with local authority trading standards officers and other agencies to target offenders who prey on vulnerable members of the community in this way.
Remember it's your home. Don't be afraid to say 'No' and report anything suspicious to police.

Community Speedwatch: August update
We were out on The Slade again today at the request of two residents concerned at the speed of vehicles near the Crawborough / school junction. We monitored almost 200 vehicles travelling towards the Enstone crossroads. The good news is that more were travelling within, or at least near, the speed limit and a small number have been reported to Thames Valley Police for follow up action. Monitoring will continue into the Autumn, with our first anniversary due at the end of September. We'll publish a summary of the data collected this year for all to review. If you want to participate, contact me on jimholah50@yahoo.co.uk or 810620.

Community Centre features in new WODC publication for “older people”
Town residents who may be considered by others (but probably not by themselves!) to be "older people" may be interested in a new West Oxfordshire District Council publication, "Our Generation". The new magazine is designed to illustrate services and activities provided locally by WODC and others and contains some useful pointers to sources of practical help.
The cover story in the first edition features a picture of John Munro, who plays walking football at Charlbury Community Centre every week. The Community Centre runs two walking football sessions each week which are organised by a local resident.
You can view the magazine online on the WODC website: www.westoxon.gov.uk; the first edition is in the News section on the Home page. You can also sign up to be notified of further editions.
Otherwise printed copies of Our Generation can be picked up from the WODC offices at Woodgreen, Witney; their Town Centre shop in Welch Way, Witney or the Council's reception point at the Guildhall, Goddards Lane Chipping Norton.

St Mary's Tree Update
It looks like the work to fell the tree will start on Tuesday and continue for a couple of days. The tree firm will get the churchyard path open as soon as it is safe to do so.
If you or any artists you know would like some wood to use, the wood will be gathered at the town-end of the churchyard for several days for individuals to carry away before the remainder is cleared.

St Mary's Tree Update
I am sorry to report that after the WODC tree preservation officer inspected the damage to the tree yesterday, he advised that the tree should be taken down. His opinion is in line with the other experts we have consulted.
We now must seek permission from the Diocese to follow the advice we have received. We will share information on timing when it is available. The churchyard path will remain closed until the tree has been removed.
We are in discussions as to how best to use the stump to reflect the place the tree had within the community as well as enhance and complement the landscape of the churchyard going forward. We also intend to make the wood available to interested artists.
