Charlbury - A Cotswolds Gateway Town

We have just had confirmation that bids for funding from the Cotswolds Conservation Board and Great Western Railway have been successful. This means that Charlbury will officially be a Cotswold Gateway Town.
In the first place we will get new information boards at the station and in the Town.
The other aspect is to improve walking and cycling routes from Charlbury to promote tourism. This will be co-ordinated by Charlbury Walkers and Cyclists are Welcome.
The walks will be circular walks through the Mill Field and up to Banbury Hill Farm which will involve improvements on existing paths and the creation of new permissive paths which will all be signed. There will also be two new information boards on the Mill Field walk.
The Cotswolds Voluntary Wardens will be carrying out this work for the project.
Cycle routes through Charlbury will also be improved and signed.
Also We will get new Town entrance signs recognising this status.
We will welcome input from anyone on this project particularly on the content and design of the notice boards.
So if you have any ideas and would like to help please let me know by email at tonyhmerry@gmail.com

West Oxfordshire Local Plan adopted

Yesterday West Oxfordshire voted to adopt a new local plan
This is a very significant event and here is why
The Local Plan is one of the key documents in deciding planning applications
Other documents are the National Planning Policy Framework (this was also updated this summer) and a Neighbourhood Plan which is now being drafted and should be ready next year.
The real significance for Charlbury is that all of these documents say that development in an AONB is only allowed where there is a benefit to the community and restricts the nature and locations for new developments
As Charlbury is in the Cotswolds AONB we have this added protection. Unfortunately places like Eynsham and Woodstock do not as was pointed out in the District Council meeting yesterday
More information can be found at https://www.westoxon.gov.uk/residents/planning-building/planning-policy/local-development-framework/local-plan-2031-examination/
and will be made clear when we circulate the Neighbourhood Plan for comments

Charlbury SMILE - sharing good memories

Charlbury SMILE, a new care and wellbeing group for people who live with memory loss and their carers, started at The Friends Meeting House in June. Led by arts and dementia specialist Clare Carswell of Blossom Arts and dementia researcher Rhonda Riachi of Autumn Gold Education, it has been funded by Age UK Oxfordshire for four pilot sessions. The two-hour sessions offer fun and stimulating reminiscence and creative activities for people who are living with memory loss, as well as supporting and sharing information with their carers.

Each session starts with refreshments, welcome and seated exercise to music, after which the carers spend some time in another room with Rhonda, and Clare and volunteers lead the activity time. In our first two sessions we made foil paintings inspired by summer flowers, and tropical islands from fresh fruit which we then enjoyed eating. At our last session we looked at archive photos from the seaside as we reminisced about our summer holidays and made aqua painting pictures with a seaside theme, before ending with a game of balloon volley ball. Any session may end with a bop to Elvis or Ol' Blue Eyes! We are pleased to see regulars enjoying the sessions and returning each time.

Rhonda and Clare are grateful to Age UK for their support at this early stage and will be fundraising to continue the SMILE group twice monthly in Charlbury. There are people in the town and surrounding area who are isolated, living with anxiety or memory problems or who have a diagnosis of dementia, and this group can be very enjoyable for them, as well as helpful for their carers. Clare and Rhonda look forward to meeting the growing need for such a group in the town.

The next session will be on Friday 28th September at 10.30 at The Friends House Market Street. We will be joined by Hands on Oxfordshire's Heritage from the Oxfordshire County Council Museum Service, who will bring a carefully chosen selection of interesting objects, photos and documents on the theme of entertainment to share with the group and Rhonda will be discussing how to get help and look after ourselves with carers.

If you know of anyone who might benefit from this group, they or their carer need to ring Rhonda on 07533 248659 or Clare on 07769 723328 to have a chat and to book onto the sessions.

Sponsor the Arunai Kids

If you care about kids and you care about education, how about giving a few quid to help some girls get educated?
These girls are in Tamil Nadu, the most southernmost state in India.
They're in school now but they are dependent on people like us to be able to stay there and get qualified. When girls get qualified, they become women who change things.
We have a couple of local characters who are aiming to support these girls by raising cash.
Jim Pearce(singer-songwriter,erstwhile taxi-driver and all-round good bloke)is doing the Snowdonia Marathon in support of the Arunai Kids.
Jim is now in training for THE SNOWDONIA MARATHON on SATURDAY 27th OCTOBER.
Will Ord(writer, educator, philosopher and all-round good bloke) is ensuring that every £1 donated here can achieve £10 value when spent on the Arunai Kids.
You can sponsor Jim by signing up on the sponsor sheets behind the bar in the Rose and Crown or in The Three Horseshoes.
Please pop in to either hostelry to enjoy a beer and add a few quid to help these girls become women of influence.

Brian Fisher, Fishmonger

Brian's loyal customers will have missed him on the last two Tuesdays so it is with great sadness that I must report that Brian died suddenly on 3rd September at the age of 61. Further information can be found here www.family-announcements.co.uk/grimsby/view/4627989/fisher. His daughter reports that it is likely his route will be taken over by someone else in due course, but it will be hard to replace his cheery greeting and fine service to the community.
