ROAD SENSOR TRIAL

Those who attended the Parish Meeting on Friday heard the Chairman tell us about the proposed installation of sensors to measure vehicle speeds on some roads in and around the town.
It can now be revealed that the investigation will also include trials of equipment, still under development, to measure much more than speed: tyre pressures, engine revs, condition of tappets and valves, are all possibilities. Measurement of vehicle weight could, for instance, allow drivers of heavy vehicles making for Burford to be warned that their vehicle is above the permitted weight for the bridge over the river.
The trial is in the hands of the Pirla Olof, the Scandinavian concern who, some may remember, a few years ago conducted trials of a new Sat Nav/TV system for traffic and road information. Their spokesman, commenting on the latest trial said "We are very excited about this new equipment as there are almost no limits to its potential: measurement of a driver's heart rate and blood pressure, for instance, could give new insight into the prevention of road rage".

30 new parking spaces planned for station

First Great Western has been awarded an extension to their franchise to last until 2019.

As part of the deal, Charlbury station will get 30 new car parking spaces, while Hanborough will get 44.

New 'Intercity Express' trains will be introduced to replace HSTs across the Great Western area, and these will provide an hourly service in each direction (to London and to Worcester) from 2017/2018. Journey times to London will be reduced by a little over five minutes. The exact timetable details are not finalised, but an early diagram appears to suggest some peak trains will call at Didcot only between Oxford and Paddington.

Finally, First Great Western is likely to be rebranded as 'GWR' in an allusion to the original Great Western Railway.

Separate improvements already announced include a revised timetable starting this May, which should make the 07.12 departure more reliable; free wifi on all trains on the Cotswold Line, including Turbos; more cycle parking at Charlbury station; and 100 new car parking spaces at Kingham. There is also likely to be a new late-night service from London to Charlbury and Moreton, but this has not yet been officially confirmed.

Charlbury station extended opening hours

There is currently an experiment afoot to keep the ticket office open until 19.00 to see if ticket sales merit making this permanent. Unfortunately, it is not possible to change the opening hours notice by the front door! But the ticket office really is open beyond the current hours, so go and buy your tickets there when you are travelling after 12.20.

More bike parking for Charlbury station

First Great Western is spending £125,000 to improve bike parking along the Cotswold Line, including Charlbury.

The Department for Transport says:

"The project will significantly improve the capacity for cycle parking at the main stations between Hanborough and Evesham (including Charlbury, Honeybourne and Kingham). This project will provide additional high quality cycle parking to improve access to the line and focus on expanding capacity at stations where existing facilities are well used or improving facilities where poor cycle parking, location or security provision currently limit use."

Sally Welch is Charlbury's new vicar

We are delighted to announce that our next Vicar and Area Dean will be the Revd Dr Sally Welch.

Sally lived in Charlbury more than 15 years ago. Following ordination, she had 10 years of experience of rural and small-town ministry, and she has been serving in the parish of St Margaret's and St Giles, Oxford since 2009. In Oxford, she has particular responsibility for outreach to families and young people.

Sally is at present also the Oxford Diocesan Spirituality Advisor, with a particular interest in the contribution of pilgrimage to church life.

Sally will be licensed to the parish by the Bishop of Dorchester on Tuesday 14th July, in St Mary's Church. We look forward very much to her joining us, and to welcoming her and her family back to Charlbury.
