Emergency medical supplies for Syria

Charlbury Refugee Action and several other local refugee groups are collecting Medical Aid for a container being sent to hospitals and doctors in Syria in September by the charity UK Action for Refugees.

Please leave things you wish to donate in the collection bin on the table just inside the door in the Corner House, or phone 811378 for other options.

Items you can leave in the bin in the Corner House (please do not leave any other items) are

Unwanted spectacles
Antiseptics etc.
Tourniquets
Medical tape
Gauze
Bandages, dressings, plasters
Hand sanitiser
Surgical masks
Gloves (latex and non-latex)

If you have medicines/drugs to donate, please call 811378 and we can collect from you.

It is not critical that items are within their use-by date. In the basement of a bombed-out hospital, any dressing or medication may be judged better than none. If in doubt, we can let the doctors out there decide.

Don’t miss a chance to give us your views on Charlbury as a business location

As part of their work to produce a strategic plan for the town based on local views and ideas, the Charlbury Neighbourhood Forum (CNF) is seeking the views of local businesses, including home-based businesses.

If you have a business based in Charlbury, please have a look at the CNF business survey which is online at: www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/Charlbury_Business/. You can complete the survey online or, if you prefer, you can to give your views in an interview carried out at your business location (or elsewhere) by someone from the CNF. This can be arranged at a time to suit you.

The business survey is much shorter than the recent household/individual survey and has different questions aimed specifically at getting local businesses' views on what Charlbury is like as a business location and whether there are ways in which the town can help them to thrive.

If you have any questions about the survey or would like to request an interview, please contact the CNF by ringing 07421 769110 or emailing: info@charlburyneighbourhoodforum.org.uk.

Please do give your business a voice in shaping the future of the town. The CNF needs your views by 19 September 2016.

Spice bags for Calais refugee camp

Volunteers at The Jungle camp distribute boxes of food for refugees to cook their own meals (as well as providing hot cooked meals where they are needed). Bagging up spices in small quantities is labour intensive and time consuming, which is why the helpers on site are appealing for people to do the preparation here and send/take the bags across.

Can you help Charlbury Refugee Action Group members and friends make up a 1000 spice bags to send across the Channel?

Find out more and get the spice bag 'recipe' here bit.ly/2bxV9Eq

If you would like to take part, please email charlburyrefugee@gmail.com and we will put you in touch with the local coordinator. Or check our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/charlburyrefugee/posts/311982002483571

Charlbury takes on Afghanistan at cricket!

Well, not quite! But yesterday a dozen young refugees and asylum seekers from Oxford (and originally from Afghanistan, Syria, Eritrea and elsewhere) were the guests of Charlbury Cricket Club for the afternoon. David Horne, Paul Jenkins and Tom Nash were the coaches, to whom we are extremely grateful. Other members of the club made up the numbers, including members of the junior XI.

It was all good fun, and went down well with the visitors.

We can't show photographs of faces, so take our word for it that there is a lot of enthusiastic cricket being played out there.

Thanks go to Helena Cullen, youth worker with Asylum Welcome, for arranging it at the Oxford end, and to members of Charlbury Refugee Action Group for the tea and refreshments that were devoured in the interval.
