Garden cafe at News & Things

News & Things proprietors Bill and Veronica Jones have opened a garden café - an outdoor addition to the Ramble On Café inside the newsagents. Coffees, teas and cakes are brought out to the buddleia-shaded tables and customers can also choose from cold drinks, sandwiches and a range of baked pastries and pies inside the shop.

Access to the walled garden is handy for buggies and wheelchairs through sidegates off Sheep Street. The café is open 9am til 4pm Monday to Saturday, and til 5pm on Sundays while the weather remains good. For more information: newsthings@hotmail.com .

Charlbury Street Fair 2005

Well, as you all know Street Fair this year will be on 17th September.

Charlbury Street Fair is an annual event, held to help raise funds for the upkeep of the two community buildings in Charlbury, the Corner House and the Memorial Hall.

This event has been running since September 1955 and so this year is the 50th anniversary of Street Fair.

This year we have many events, amusements, stalls and a fairground. The day will be packed from the beginning at 1.30pm when our celebrity Ken Farrington (“Tom King” from Emmerdale) will be judging the Children’s Fancy Dress and then opening the fair at 2.00pm. The theme this year is CARNIVAL.

The activities during the afternoon will be many – Morris Men dancing, drummers drumming, children’s entertainer entertaining plus many more.

The afternoon comes to a close about 5pm – but that’s not the end. Slainte will start playing in the Street about 6.30pm to the many crowds who will be eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Grand Evening Parade. The judging of the parade will start at 6.45pm by the Scout Hut, and then the parade will slowly makes its way into Church Street so all can see the wonderful costumes, floats etc.

A free workshop is being held at the Shed on 3rd September from 10.30am to help anyone design and make their costumes for the parade.

The evening will eventually end at 10pm with us all dancing in the Street to the sounds of Slainte, who after a very busy day still manage to get us all on our feet.

Do come and support this worthy cause – there are many prizes to win in our Grand Draw and many other competitions too.

If that wasn’t enough, the next day there will be a 10K run, and 2.5K fun run or walk, starting from the Playing Close at 10.30am, all proceeds going to Street Fair.

Phew!
