Charlbury Community Speedwatch, news & 2019 summary

The Charlbury CSW team had a busy 2019, carrying out a total of 57 sessions at various points around the town. In those sessions we checked the speed of 8,583 vehicles and notified 463 drivers to Thames Valley Police for follow up.  Whether it was our presence or just people learning to drive within the speed limit we're not sure, but overall, speeding vehicles reduced to 14%  of the total checked last year.

One of the worst locations for speeding was Woodstock Rd, so today we held our first session of 2020 with the support of TVP .  Drivers travelling in excess of 40 mph in the 30 mph zone were stopped and advised that had their speed been recorded by TVP, they would be rewarded with a £100 fine and 3 points on their license.

If you want to join us in making the roads around Charlbury safer, contact charlburycsw@gmail.com and we'll be in touch.

GWR to withdraw from Easit Scheme

Easit sent me a letter that basically states that GWR are withdrawing from the scheme after 31st March 2020. Easit urges users to write to their MPs.

I understand that not all Charlbury Easit users have been notified.

This affects our commuter route into Oxford.

Charlbury Honoured Citizen Award

Following the presentation of the inaugural Charlbury Honoured Citizen Award to Ken and Margaret Taylor in January last year, the town council is now inviting nominations for presentation during Spring 2020.  For details and a nomination form, please contact Roger Clarke, the town clerk at charlburytc@btinternet.com or on 01608 810608 (9am to 5pm weekdays only). Nominations for the 2020 award must be received by 31st January 2020 at the latest.

An Honoured Citizen Award is a tribute to an individual who has given dedicated voluntary service, probably over many years, and as a consequence has made a significant positive difference to the Community and to the lives of residents.

Nominations are invited for current or former Charlbury residents who have given outstanding service to the town. All nominations must be proposed and seconded by two current Charlbury residents, neither of whom are related to the nominee.  Serving members and employees of the Town Council are not eligible for the award, nor may they propose or second any nominations. Regrettably, awards cannot be made posthumously.

Playing Close Railings

The Thomas Gifford Trust is very grateful to the Town Council for a grant to cover the cost of re-painting the Playing Close railings (a painstaking job!). The railings are a listed monument so need to be properly looked after. Some of the benches were also repainted and we hope to get the rest done when the weather improves. The Town Council gives an annual grant to cover the costs of maintaining the Playing Close, which I'm sure everyone will agree is an important asset for the town. Many thanks to the Town Council and also to Kieron and his team for doing the work. It's looking fantastic.
