Charlbury takes on Afghanistan at cricket!

Well, not quite! But yesterday a dozen young refugees and asylum seekers from Oxford (and originally from Afghanistan, Syria, Eritrea and elsewhere) were the guests of Charlbury Cricket Club for the afternoon. David Horne, Paul Jenkins and Tom Nash were the coaches, to whom we are extremely grateful. Other members of the club made up the numbers, including members of the junior XI.

It was all good fun, and went down well with the visitors.

We can't show photographs of faces, so take our word for it that there is a lot of enthusiastic cricket being played out there.

Thanks go to Helena Cullen, youth worker with Asylum Welcome, for arranging it at the Oxford end, and to members of Charlbury Refugee Action Group for the tea and refreshments that were devoured in the interval.
