Sun 21 Jun: Southill Solar Summer Solstice Open Day
This coming Sunday Southill Solar will be opening its doors for the first time to celebrate it's 10th anniversary. In that time we have generated 40,000 MWh, saving approximately 20,000 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to powering around 1,400 homes each year. Flora and fauna has exploded across the site with healthy populations of invertebrates, birds and small mammals. Southill Community Energy has also distributed over £0.5million towards environmental projects.
The site will be open from 10.30am - 3.30pm. Because access is restricted, with no footpaths or parking facilities, we will be running an electric shuttle bus between the Spendlove car park and Southill Solar on the half hour and hour, with the first bus departing Spendlove at 10.30am and the last bus returning from Southill at 3.30pm. We are extremely grateful to OurBus Barton for supplying the bus.
You are very welcome to come for as long as you want during that time, maybe bring some coffee, or take a picnic by the river or in our meadow. Paths have been scythed where the grasses have been longest.
Anne Miller will be on hand to answer any questions and to help with any flora and fauna identification. We hope to have our bee man Tom Worsley there to discuss all apiarist-related matters.
The night before, starting at 9.30pm, (no shuttle bus I'm afraid, but limited parking in the lay-bye) Anne will also be leading a moth count followed by a dusk solstice night time walk to our meadow to see the glow worms - our very own mid-summer nights dream! If we have enough puff we will repeat the glow worm walk on the Solstice too!
We look forward to seeing you next weekend to help celebrate this wonderful community-owned asset. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible.
