Tour of Britain cycle race coming to Charlbury

The Tour of Britain - Britain's only elite cycle stage race - will be coming to Charlbury in September.

The penultimate stage of the nine-day race will pass through Charlbury on Saturday 9th September. The racers will be riding from Hemel Hempstead to Cheltenham, before a finish in Cardiff the next day. The Tour of Britain attracts many of the greatest bike riders in the world who in previous years have included Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and Chris Froome.

The route will enter via the Woodstock Road, then pass along Park Street, Church Street and Market Street before leaving via Dyers Hill. It is expected to pass around lunchtime. From Charlbury the race goes on to Shipton, Bourton-on-the-Water, Moreton, Stow, Winchcombe and Cheltenham.

To show the town at its best to riders, visitors and TV cameras, the Street Fair bunting will be strung up and a Big Town Tidy event is in the offing. On the day itself, we are hoping to organise family cycling events, stalls and rides. If you would like to help, please drop me a line (richard@systemeD.net, or 11 Market Street). Given Charlbury's location on the railway line from London and Oxford, and the Saturday timing, we are expecting big crowds!
