THE PROBUS CLUB OF CHARLBURY & DISTRICT
We currently have 39 members who enjoy meeting together for lunch on the 1st Wednesday of each month, except January. We hold our meetings at the Witney Lakes Resort. Each meeting lasts about 3 hours and includes time to socialise at the bar before sitting down to a two course lunch, followed by a short presentation from an invited speaker. Our aim is to enjoy the company and meal in very relaxed surroundings. Our dress code is smart casual, ties are not required.
At our most recent meeting on Wednesday 5th June was attended by 26 members who enjoyed a two course lunch of chicken breast wrapped in pancetta, served with Dauphinoise potatoes, followed by fresh fruit salad and a dollop of mango sorbet, finished off with the obligatory tea/coffee with mint chocolates. Our after lunch speaker was Secretary, Mike White, who spoke to us on the subject of 'Policing the 1970's'.
Previous Speakers: During 2018 our other speakers spoke on a great variety of subjects including: Tea, including a tasting; The History of the Waltz; Underwater photography; Inheritance Tax; and Snowshill Manor. This year our speakers have included Anne Lawson-Porter speaking on travels in South America and Mike Tysoe on the subject of 'Shipbroking'.
This year we have planned speakers on such varied subjects as: Russian History and Culture, The Salvation Army, Decorative Glass and the Deepwater Horizon Incident. So there is much to look forward to.
Next Lunch: Wednesday 3rd July when our speaker will be our own David Vernon-Jones who will be talking to us on the subject of 'Notes on Russian History and Culture' .
We have outings to which partners and friends are invited. Last year we have visited the Black Country living Museum in Dudley and the Watermill Theatre near Newbury to see a matinee performance of the musical 'Sweet Charity'. Most recently, during November, 40 members, Friends and partners, enjoyed an afternoon matinee performance at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. We are already planning the program for 2019 which will include the Watermill Theatre to see 'Kiss Me Kate' ,which will be on Thursday the 29th of August, and the Symphony Hall on Thursday 28th November. We are also taking our annual coach trip to Bristol and I.K. Brunel's SS Great Britain, and the Bristol Blue Glass factory on June 12th. We are also in early planning stages of holding our very first summer BBQ, probably to held in September.
