THE PROBUS CLUB OF CHARLBURY & DISTRICT
In common with any social club we have reluctantly suspended all lunches and events organised by Charlbury Probus. This is initially for 3 months but may be extended depending on Government advise and common sense. Thanks to all of our members and supporters.
We currently have 39 Gentlemen members who enjoy meeting together for lunch on the 1st Wednesday of each month, except January. We hold our meetings at the Witney Lakes Resort. Each meeting lasts about 3 hours and includes time to socialise at the bar before sitting down to a two course lunch, followed by a short presentation from an invited speaker. Our aim is to enjoy the company and meal in very relaxed surroundings. Our dress code is smart casual, ties are not required.
At our most recent meeting on Wednesday the 4th December was attended by 42 members and partners who enjoyed a two course Festive lunch of either traditional roast turkey and trimmings or baked hake, followed Christmas pudding or, my particular favourite, lemon posset, finished off with the obligatory tea/coffee with mini mince pies. Our after lunch speaker was Mike Hurst who reminded us 'The Old Time Chrristmas'.
Previous Speakers: During 2019 our other speakers spoke on a great variety of subjects including: shipbroking, homelessness, the Deepwater Horizon oilrig accident, travels in South America, Russian History and Culture, Policing in the 1970's, North Korea, and decorative glass.
Next Lunch: Wednesday 5th February when our speaker will be our very own Phil Roberts who will be talking to us on the subject of 'The Worshipful Company of Pattenmakers - the story of a City Livery Company'.
Activities: We have outings to which partners and friends are invited. In previous years we have visited Kelmscott Manor, Stratford-upon-von, the Black Country living Museum in Dudley and the Watermill Theatre near Newbury and the Symphony Hall in Birmingham. This year we have already had an outing to Bristol to visit Isambard Kingdom Brunel's 'SS Great Britain', the Watermill Theatre to see 'Kiss Me Kate, and on November 28th, the Birmingham Symphony Hall. This year we held a very successful summer BBQ in a joint venture with the Charlbury Ladies Luncheon Club which took place on a sunny afternoon at the Charlbury Bowls Club.
We also have a 'Black Tie' dinner in January each year, usually the third Thursday, when members can dress up and enjoy a proper festive dinner with light entertainment. The date of our forthcoming dinner will be Thursday 16th January 2020.
Applying for Membership
The cost of membership is currently £15 per annum, with a charge of £20.00 for each lunch attended. The lunches are two courses, a main and a dessert, followed by tea/coffee and chocolate mints. The speaker presentation follows the lunch. The Christmas lunch in December features festive cuisine and costs a little more.
We always welcome new members, if you are interested in joining or simply want to find out more about us please contact the Secretary at this address or email:
