Probus Club of Charlbury

The PROBUS Club of Charlbury and District

Charlbury Probus is an informal and relaxed club for semi-retired and retired people from all backgrounds and walks of life. We aim to provide a variety of activities, visits and social events to entertain and amuse our members and their guests. New members are always welcome to join us at our lunch meetings and Social events, the contact details can be found at the foot of this page.

Lunches are quite informal and are held monthly at Sturdy's Castle, near Kidlington, a 20 minute drive from Charlbury. To assist in travelling to our lunches we have a successful car share scheme in operation. There is usually a one or two course meal, which is followed by a guest speaker. Speakers in the past have come from a variety of backgrounds including medical, historical, local interest and charitable. The club produces a monthly newsletter called 'Kingfisher' in which all details of the club and forthcoming events can be found, you do not have to be a member to receive the newsletter and anyone with a possible interest in Probus activities can request being placed on the circulation list.

The next scheduled lunch meeting is on Wednesday the 4th of February. For this meeting we have a guest speaker in the form of Ursula Corcoran who is the Director of the 'Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum' at Woodstock. Her after lunch presentation is entitled ''Conflict and County'. If you are interested in attending this, or any of our lunches and after lunch talks please contact the club secretary, Simon Handley email: simon.handley8@icloud.com

However, although we do not formally meet for lunch in January, we have organised a 'Curry Lunch at Sturdy's Castle' for Wednesday the 14th of January. There is no guest speaker for this lunch, but we usually manage to persuade the Sturdy's award winning chef to give us a cultural and gastronomic overview of the food he has prepared for us. Again, if this is something that appeals, please contact our secretary (details above).

We are well advanced with planning lunches, trips and events for 2026 and details of these can be found in the club's monthly newsletter 'The Kingfisher'. For a copy of the newsletter please contact the club via the email address at the bottom of this page. Our next 'event' is a coach trip to Birmingham on the 17th of April, the main focus being an afternoon classical music concert featuring the music of Rossini, Puccini and Beethoven. There will also be time for a bit of shopping and a spot of lunch before the concert.

Applying for Membership

The cost of membership is currently £25 per annum. Guests are welcome to join us at the current cost of the lunch to try us out (this applies to the first lunch only, thereafter a small premium is payable for non-members). The current cost of a two course meal, plus coffee/tea and mint chocolates, is £26, or £23 for a single main course.

Thank you for taking time to read about Charlbury Probus, hopefully we may see you at one of our future meetings.
