Probus Club of Charlbury

THE PROBUS CLUB OF CHARLBURY & DISTRICT

Membership
We currently have 39 members who enjoy meeting together for lunch on the 1st Wednesday of each month, except January. We hold our meetings at the Witney Lakes Resort. Each meeting lasts about 3 hours and includes time to socialise at the bar before sitting down to a two course lunch, followed by a short presentation from an invited speaker. Our aim is to enjoy the company and meal in very relaxed surroundings. Our dress code is smart casual, ties are not required.

At our most recent meeting on Wednesday 7th August was attended by 27 members and guests who enjoyed a two course lunch of pan fish pie, followed by apple crumble, finished off with the obligatory tea/coffee with mint chocolates. Our after lunch speaker was Harry Thierens who spoke to us on his time working in the oil industry and his involvement in the resolution of the Deep Water Horizon tragedy.

Previous Speakers: During 2018 our other speakers spoke on a great variety of subjects including: Tea, including a tasting; The History of the Waltz; Underwater photography; Inheritance Tax; and Snowshill Manor. This year our speakers have included Anne Lawson-Porter speaking on travels in South America and Mike Tysoe on the subject of 'Shipbroking'.

This year we have planned speakers on such varied subjects as:  The Salvation Army, Decorative Glass and the Old Time Christmas. So there is much to look forward to.

Next Lunch: Wednesday 4th September when our speaker will be our own Margaret Hancox who will be talking to us on the subject of her Travels in North Korea.

Ladies Invitation Lunch: Thursday 3rd of October is our annual partners invitation lunch when our featured speaker will be John Banbury who will be talking to us about twenty centuries of decorative glass. This successful event provides a special welcome to the wives and partners of the members.

Activities
We have outings to which partners and friends are invited. Last year we have visited the Black Country living Museum in Dudley and the Watermill Theatre near Newbury to see a matinee performance of the musical 'Sweet Charity'. During November 2018, 40 members, Friends and partners, enjoyed an afternoon matinee performance at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. This year we have already had an outing to Bristol to visit Isambard Kingdom Brunel's 'SS Great Britain'. Later in the program for 2019 we have outings to the Watermill Theatre to see 'Kiss Me Kate' ,which will be on Thursday the 29th of August, and the Symphony Hall on Thursday 28th November. We are also holding our very first summer BBQ, probably to held on Friday the 30th August, the day after the Watermill Visit.

Applying for Membership
The cost of membership is currently £15 per annum, with a charge of £20.00 for each lunch attended. The lunches are two courses, a main and a dessert, followed by tea/coffee and chocolate mints. The speaker presentation follows the lunch. The Christmas lunch in December features festive cuisine and costs a little more.
