charlbury.info

charlbury.info has been running since 2002 and has become one of Britain’s most successful small town websites. The site is entirely volunteer-run and aims to provide an electronic noticeboard for our Oxfordshire town. In 2019 the backend of the site was fully rewritten to provide opportunities for new features in the future.

New features

Although the initial focus has been on recreating the original functionality, there are a few new features in this first version:

  • ‘Likes’ for forum posts
  • Drag-and-drop file and photo uploading, including multiple photos/files per posting
  • Rich-text editor for all content on the site

The site has moved from a Perl/MySQL backend to Ruby/Postgres using the custom Kite framework.

Current issues

Getting the new site up and running has meant prioritising some features over others. Features of the old site that aren’t yet supported include:

  • Common admin mailbox
  • Forum ‘ignore’
  • Front-page tickers (train times and weather)
  • Weekly planning application updates
  • Look-and-feel issues including text alignment and gallery index page
  • Forum click-through agreement

If you spot any bugs or other issues, please use the admin board to report them. Thank you.
