Probus Club of Charlbury

THE PROBUS CLUB OF CHARLBURY & DISTRICT

Membership
We currently have 39 members who enjoy meeting together for lunch on the 1st Wednesday of each month, except January. We hold our meetings at the Witney Lakes Resort. Each meeting lasts about 3 hours and includes time to socialise at the bar before sitting down to a two course lunch, followed by a short presentation from an invited speaker. Last year we have had presentations on subjects such as the discovery of Penicillin, James Sadler, an Oxford pastry chef who became our first English Aeronaut, and Sex, Drink and Death in the 17th Century. For our May lunch our speaker was Tim Porter who gave us a fascinating presentation on 'The history of the Waltz'.The cost of lunch is currently £17.50 which includes a draw for a bottle of wine. The annual membership fee is £15.

Activities
We have outings to which partners and friends are invited, last year these outings included a matinee visit to the Watermill Theatre near Newbury, a trip on the Severn Valley Railway, and an afternoon concert at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. In previous years we have had trips to Kelmscott Manor, the former home of William Morris, followed by a trip on the Thames including lunch, and to Stratford On Avon with a visit to Shakespeare's birthplace, also followed by a trip on the river with lunch included. Last year we visited the Severn Valley Railway and spent a day enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of steam railways. To start the year off, or to see out the old one, we hold our annual dinner around the third week in January each year.

Our annual visit to the Watermill Theatre near Newbury will this year feature that wonderful musical 'Sweet Charity'. We will also be making our annual coach trip to the the Birmingham Symphony Hall the date of which is yet to be decided.

Our March meeting was our Annual General Meeting which was a lively affair with some interesting debates. One of the issues discussed was the raising of the monthly lunch fee to £17.50 brought bout by the increase in the charge made by Witney Lakes. The annual membership remains unchnged. The 2017 Committee was re-elected to serve in 2018, and, at the same time, we welcomed member Simon Handley to the Committee.

Future activities
On Wednesday 23rd of May we have our outing to the famous 'Black Country Museum' in Dudley. The museum is a large, open air area consisting of wonderful examples of life and work during the Industrial Revolution. It includes a working canal, a coal mine and the shops and dwelling houses typical of the period. All this is brought to life by actors recreating scenes as they would have been at that time.
Our lunch on Wednesday 6th June features David Gambier who will be presenting his 'My life in travel'.

You can also catch up with our activities and see some of the photos on our Facebook Page.
