Probus Club of Charlbury

THE PROBUS CLUB OF CHARLBURY & DISTRICT

Membership
We currently have 40 members who enjoy meeting together for lunch on the 1st Wednesday of each month, except January. We hold our meetings at the Witney Lakes Resort. Each meeting lasts about 3 hours and includes time to socialise at the bar before sitting down to a two course lunch, followed by a short presentation from an invited speaker.

At our most recent meeting on 5th December 2018, our speaker was Simon Walker who gave us a slide presentation on 'Gold and the Gold Rushes' which focused mainly on the California Gold Rush of 1849 and the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896.

Previous Speakers: During 2018 other speakers have spoken on a great variety of subjects including: Tea, including a tasting; The History of the Waltz; Underwater photography; Inheritance Tax; and Snowshill Manor.

Next Lunch: Wednesday 6th February 2019. We don't hold a lunch meeting in January, however, we do hold our Annual Black Tie dinner on the third Thursday of the month. The date of the next dinner is Thursday 17th January 2019 and will be held in the function room at Witney Lakes. Coach transport is available at a small charge.

Activities
We have outings to which partners and friends are invited. This year we have visited the Black Country living Museum in Dudley and the Watermill Theatre near Newbury to see a matinee performance of the musical 'Sweet Charity'. Recently, during November, 40 members, Friends and partners, enjoyed an afternoon matinee performance at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. Despite the inclement weather it was a very enjoyable day which included time for a little shopping and lunch before sitting down to listen to the Symphony Orchestra conducted by the fabulous Mirga Grazinte-Tyla playing pieces by Brahms and Tchaikovsky.

Applying for Membership
The cost of membership is currently £15 per annum, with a charge of £17.50 for each lunch attended. The lunches are two courses, a main and a dessert, followed by tea/coffee and chocolate mints. The speaker presentation follows the lunch. The Christmas lunch in December features festive cuisine and costs a little more.
