THE PROBUS CLUB OF CHARLBURY & DISTRICT
We currently have 39 members who enjoy meeting together for lunch on the 1st Wednesday of each month, except January. We hold our meetings at the Witney Lakes Resort. Each meeting lasts about 3 hours and includes time to socialise at the bar before sitting down to a two course lunch, followed by a short presentation from an invited speaker. At our December meeting this year we enjoyed our Christmas Lunch of traditional turkey and Christmas pudding and were then treated to an insight into the recent repair and restoration of the Charlbury Church Clock by local resident and clock repairer David Mitchell. This year we have had presentations on subjects such as the discovery of Penicillin, James Sadler, an Oxford pastry chef who became our first English Aeronaut, and Sex, Drink and Death in the 17th Century. The cost of lunch is currently £15 which includes a draw for a bottle of wine. The annual membership fee is £15.
We have outings to which partners and friends are invited, this year these outings include a matinee visit to the Watermill Theatre near Newbury, a trip on the Severn Valley Railway, and an afternoon concert at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. In previous years we have had trips to Kelmscott Manor, the former home of William Morris, followed by a trip on the Thames including lunch, and to Stratford On Avon with a visit to Shakespeare's birthplace, also followed by a trip on the river with lunch included. We also have an annual black-tie dinner in January just when the afterglow of Christmas is fading away.
On Thursday the 7th of September we had a great day out, as Wallace and Gromit would say, to the Severn Valley Railway. A full coach of members, partners and Probus Friends arrived at Kidderminster in time for the first steam train of the day to Bridgenorth and then spent the rest of the day enjoying the sights and sounds (and smells) of the this wonderfully preserved steam railway.
On Wednesday the 4th of October we had our annual outing to Birmingham Symphony Hall for an afternoon matinee and were treated to a bit of Mozart and a wonderful display by the energetic conductor Mirga Grazinte-Tyla. The weather was also very kind.
