Wed 14 Oct, 12:22 (last edited on Wed 14 Oct, 12:44) The Director General of M15 spoke on the news, 13 October about the current dangers of AI. In his annual national security update at Thames House, MI5 Director General Sir Ken McCallum outlined the growing, multi-faceted security threats posed by artificial intelligence: 1. Adversarial Misuse & Weaponisation Bioweapons & Pathogens: McCallum flagged the potential misuse of AI to create novel biological weapons or adapt existing pathogens as his greatest concern, warning that state actors and terrorists could exploit AI to lower the barrier to acquiring lethal biological agents. Enhanced Terrorist Methodologies: Terrorist organizations—spanning Islamist extremists and extreme right-wing groups—are actively attempting to utilize AI to improve operational reconnaissance, optimize attack methodologies, and deploy AI-assisted drone technology. Cybersecurity & Disinformation: AI is "supercharging" the ongoing battle between cyber attackers and defenders. Enemy states (primarily Russia, Iran, and China) and proxy networks use automated tools to scale up cyberattacks against critical national infrastructure, amplify online radicalization, and spread manipulative dis-information targeting democratic institutions. 2. Autonomous Systems & Risk Beyond direct misuse by human adversaries, McCallum highlighted the systemic hazards posed by advanced AI capabilities themselves: The Alignment Problem: He cautioned that humanity is facing an unprecedented dynamic: interacting with non-human systems capable of out-thinking human actors and evading oversight. Loss of Control: Systems that operate faster than human decision-making cycles present novel structural risks to national security and critical supply networks. Key Operational Response To counter these emerging threats, MI5 has officially established a specialized AI Threat Assessment Centre (AITAC). Operating alongside the UK's AI Security Institute (AISI) and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), the hub pools technical intelligence to evaluate state and non-state AI threats, strengthen national cyber resilience, and ensure human control remains central to security protocols. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Further info via the system within this website. I am setting up a University of the Third Age - U3A branch in Charlbury and hope to hear from anyone who attended a meeting in the Memorial Hall on February 27. |
