Sat 19 Nov 2022: Creating a grassroots movement for peace in Afghanistan - talk and supper

This event is in the past.

CRAG, the Charlbury Refugee Action Group, and St Mary's Church invites you to a special event on Saturday 19 November in the Charlbury Memorial Hall. Doors open at 5.45. The talk will start at 6.

Freshta Karim, an internationally-recognised Afghan child’s rights activist, will talk about her experience setting up children’s libraries in Kabul. The talk will be followed by a buffet supper.

Freshta recently addressed the UN Security Council on the way forward in Afghanistan. She was on the BBC's list of 100 influential women in 2021, Forbes 30 Under 30 and Young Global Leaders for the World Economic Forum. She works as an advisor to the Malala Fund to support 12 years of safe and quality education for girls. She lives in Oxford as a refugee and is based at Somerville College.

In 2018, she founded Charmaghz, a Kabul-based NGO dedicated to promoting critical thinking among children by providing resources and space on buses turned into mobile libraries. The libraries are currently hosting 40,000 children per month in Kabul making this the most visited library organisation in the country.
