Corner House & Memorial Hall news

  • The Corner House & Memorial Hall's finances have long been finely balanced, at the edge even sometimes of viability.  In many ways that's actually appropriate:  our whole remit is to provide a service to the town, and in no sense to be profit-making.  But it does present challenges when we want, or indeed need, to spend much money in maintaining or developing our lovely, but costly, building.  So we're very pleased that our January to June income this year was more than half as much again as in the same period last year.  This is because of two factors – first, a significant increase in the number of bookings of our two buildings (thank you, valued customers!);  and secondly some steady rental income from the Deli (now the Garden Café) for two rooms that previously provided no revenue for us.
  • We're working at the moment on improving our signage, and where possible that of our regular tenants, to be be both more effective and more æsthetic.  With the Café now making good use of our rear patio and garden, we want to highlight more clearly that our open space (especially further from the building, and beside & behind the Memorial Hall) is community space, free for all to enjoy in this fine weather.  New signs will emphasize that, alongside less-cluttered information about café opening hours, wayfinding, and plenty else.
  • Our cleaners have retired, after several years of dedicated service.  We're already looking at possible replacements, but would also be glad to hear from you if you'd be interested in helping us in this way:  it's a regular paid post, based around an hour a day, seven days a week, but flexible therefore in terms of part-week working, job-share etc.  Let us know if you'd like to know more.
  • Finally, the annual Street Fair is one of our most important fund-raising events .. and the bottle tombola is one of the best money-raisers at it.  Donations (anything from a can of coke to a bottle of vintage champagne) will gladly be received at the Corner House.
