Tue 7 Oct, 17:29 The Rosie is one of The Telegraph's 500 best pubs in the country. (Can a Telegraph subscriber tell us what number it is? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/best-pubs-england/ ) From https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/25522300.award-winning-pub-cotswolds-named-among-englands-best/ – not sure if this is new news or old news? Published 12 hours ago but feels like old news ... An award-winning Oxfordshire pub has been named among the very best in England. The Rose and Crown in Charlbury was included in The Telegraph's guide to the 500 best pubs in the country. The pub, which was bought by family-run pub company Oak Taverns earlier this year, took to social media last week to share the news. The list is chosen by Telegraph expert Will Hawkes and celebrates the 'very best that the country has to offer'. A letter from head of travel Ben Ross congratulating the pub on its inclusion in the list said: "Here at The Telegraph we're very aware that the great British pub is under threat with more than 2,250 closing during the last five years. "We hope that our 500 Best Pubs in England guide will encourage millions of people to discover some of the country's finest venues." The Rose and Crown has been voted local CAMRA pub of the year several times and won the Oxfordshire title in 2018. In June, then-owner Nikki Page issued a heartfelt goodbye to her customers. She said: "As many of you know, when Tom sadly passed away in 2023, I took over the licence to run the Rose and Crown. "Since then, I’ve tried to run The Rosie in the spirit my dad did for some 37 years. "While the business continues to thrive, I’ve been reflecting for some time on the pub’s future - and my own. "After much deliberation and many sleepless nights, I’ve decided to sell the Rose and Crown. "This is something Dad and I talked about often in the latter part of his life, so his wishes are very much embedded in the decision I’m announcing today — as well as in my hopes for the future of the pub that’s been in my family for nearly four decades. "I’m pleased to let you know that a lovely, family-run real ale group will be taking over the reins and giving the Rose and Crown the care, attention and investment it needs to serve Charlbury for another 40 years." She added: "As you can imagine, this has been a difficult decision, and one I’ve kept quiet to avoid too much speculation or uncertainty. "But throughout, the staff, our customers - and the whole community - have been on my mind as I navigated this change. "I want to thank you all for your support, loyalty and encouragement over the years. "I hope you’ll continue to enjoy this special place as we move forward together into The Rosie’s next chapter." |
