RE rover tickets, GWR's promotional efforts are pretty feeble, but ticket office staff on the Cotswold Line are well aware of their existence. I know they have been advising people who commute outside the peak to London several days a week about them for a long time, with the availability of railcard discounts on them another factor that can make them very good value for money in a number of situations.

Details of these and other discounts on GWR are listed here www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/1405.aspx
From the long list, the Cotswold Line Railcard, Cotswold Discoverer, Network Railcard (or the various national railcards), Oxford Evening Out, Oxfordshire Day Ranger, Thames Rover (3-day or 7-day) are most relevant locally

Note that railcard discounts apply to the Oxford Evening Out ticket, bringing it down to £2.05, and it is a ranger ticket, so if you want to go anywhere - or to multiple places - within the area bounded by Kingham, Banbury and Didcot, that's fine, and if you are in Oxford, you or someone visiting you for the evening can buy one there to travel to Charlbury. What remains to be seen when the link between Oxford and Oxford Parkway reopens is whether it will again be accepted by Chiltern for journeys to and from Bicester.

Most GWR/rail network generally ticket machines do not accept cash, to prevent them being smashed by thieves, which reached epidemic proportions a few years ago.

James, if a specific ticket machine is out of order, relevant GWR staff are all notified by a text message, including guards, revenue inspectors and barrier staff at stations. 'I only have cash' is not an 'excuse', it is a valid reason as to why you do not have a ticket when asked on board a train (when the ticket office is closed, of course) - but do make sure you actually have sufficient cash with you to buy a ticket...

Trevor, your friends at Chiltern Railways don't offer an evening rate at their car parks, so why should GWR? Anyone thinking of travelling from Bicester Village into Oxford after December will pay £4.50 to park, before you even get to the rail fare. Oxford City Council's 'evening' parking rate starts at 8pm, so not a lot of use when going to an event starting at 7.30pm, never mind the cost of parking in Oxford generally.

Richard Fairhurst, I believe, complied this guide to tickets after FGW/GWR changed the Cotswold Line fares structure. Some of the fares have since changed but the basic outline remains the same
