Removed, thanks. Second one I've seen. Not conventional spam in that someone has to register and login to post it. They seem to target quite old postings.

Thanks Richard. I've edited this otherwise it looks like I'm having a go at Malcolm!

10k dB was a deliberate tongue-in-cheek guys just to keep a few tatters of credibility! ISTR its got the largest thrust single engine extant, and it sounded it...

Just happened to step outside the front door to see a low flying Lancaster bomber! What a beauty, have not seen one for a few years but that was an unexpected treat!

Certain RIAT arrivals on Wednesday and Thursday were tasked to meet up with a Shorts Skyvan SC7 camera ship in order to carry out a photographic detail. They were operating in a block north of Fairford, which sometimes took them over Charlbury, mainly on Thursday.

Amongst those I saw formating with the Skyvan on Thursday were, Swiss Air Force F/A-18C Hornets x2; German Air Force EF2000t (aka Eurofighter Typhoon) x1; Royal Netherlands Air Force F-16AM Falcons x2; Airbus A400M, Transport (Company Demonstrator); Canadian Armed Forces CP-140 Aurora, Maritime Patrol (aka Lockheed P-3 Orion). The aircraft being mentioned here which was making the most noise, was a U S Air Force F15E Eagle. Possibly out of RAF Lakenheath.

According to the Air Tattoo web site, the Royal Air Force Lockheed F-35B will only be carrying out a Fly-Past on Friday and Saturday.

Malcolm, see https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/34jfty/at_sea_level_how_much_power_is_there_in_a_10000/ for info about that "loud" noise!

My guess is that the manoeuvres were something to do with filming the F35.  At one stage there were two of them up there with the Skyvan, which was presumably the camera platform.

I think that is a little over the top Malcolm, 200 decibels is very dramatic - 10,000 would be a first!

J35 at 10,000dB... so much for stealth. Thought it was something never heard before.

Thank you Brian, for that very useful bit of info. As you said they were far from quiet but an incredible display. Hopefully more in the next couple of days.

Deborah, with the 'chunky shape' your drone-like aircraft looked a bit like a Shorts Skyvan (aka the Flying Shoebox), accompanied perhaps by the new F35. Whatever they were, it was astonishing to see them so close together, with one flying at about its maximum speed of 200 mph and the jet travelling at surely its lowest speed. An amazing display -  but with an enormous amount of noise pollution too!

The Fairford air show starts tomorrow, I assume they’re practising.

The sky seems to be full of planes today, namely what appears to be a drone like plane with a fighter plane accompanying it going around the area in circles. Any ideas??
