Which cabinet was that? Ours is up the east end of Enstone Rd near the Slade/Nineacres crossroad. I got the impression it wasn't just this cabinet that must have failed to cover the areas unless the wiring is even weirder than expected! Forgot about the batteries, which we found out about following the car collision event a few years back. Perhaps if there is a fail upstream it means that all below in the distribution need to be reset. I find it rather disconcerting how tenuous the thread holding the internet together is, seeing how dependent I am on it now. It's not been a long time - been "on the internet" since to 80s and the founding of GreenNet with everything ftp'd. And then the founding of Demon when the World Wide Web began to form in the early 90s. It's not that long when you think about it. ADSL, cable etc is really only since the early 2000's for always-on connection. Frightening.

After they trip out, the cabinets run off battery back-up power for a number of hours. When the battery eventually runs down, internet access dies. This explains why it cut out some time after the storm passed. Very informative eningeer explained whilst rebooting the cabinet.

Malcolm

I think you are correct. A number of cabinets in Charlbury were isolated from the exchange progressively this morning. Whilst you appear to have been disconnected in the early hours (well early for me), Dyers Hill was not disconnected until 8.30am. A little odd for a storm that had passed by 10pm?

On the upside my sync speed is now considerably fastet

I wasn't asleep at just after 5am when the internet suddenly quit mid-streaming a podcast (anyone else get fibromyalgia "painsomnia"? - you'll know what I mean..)

As far as I was aware there wasn't any significant rain at that point, the storm had been hours before when water started encroaching on the Rosie pub. So if a box got shorted by water it must have had a leak work through a seal, or run-off accumulating with a time lag. However, when I contacted the Phone Coop tech support at 5.30am they told me there had been 28 dropouts on my line since 13.00h the day before, indicating a hardware problem (increasing?). It could have been coincidence of course, with two separate faults. I'm going to contact the tekkies now that I am reminded to see if things have improved since coming back online. A tip - if you want to talk to a real engineer ring in the early hours, the script-kiddie "technical" support go home earlier...

Back on for Dyers Hill. Spoke to the Open Reach engineer. The cabinet had simply tripped out in the storm.

BT reports that fault reported at 4.17 and should be fixed by 9.18.

Hope so!
