Query about Samuel Gomm:

If Phil Heeks is still reading this website he might like to know -- if doesn't already know -- that somebody has posted the Charlbury baptismal & marriage & burial records for the Gomm / Gumm / Gam faily at http://www.pluggedout.com/familytree/index.php?pk=parish_register_gumm. The marriage with Mary Ann Hamlett is listed there.

This seems to be a copy of the records that are held under the desk in the Charlbury Museum.

Some Gomms do still live locally & are quite easy to locate. Whether they are descended from Samuel Gomm I don't know.

I came across this information when researching Charlbury people who were sentenced to be transported to Australia for a Charlbury Museum display.

THOMAS GUMM (a.k.a. GOMM) aged 24; baptised, 24/12/1816. Tried Oxford Assize 27/2/1841. Sentenced for 15 years for stabbing Edward Pratley at the Fawler Feast on 19/10/1840. Sent on Transport Ship Barrosa to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), 27/8/1841.

Those interested in the question of local people transported to the colonies might like to know that a local researcher in Witney, Carol Richmond, is currently researching this topic for a large exhibition at Oxfordsire Record Office a year from now. This covers all those transported from the Oxforshire Courts between 1787 and 1867.

So far it looks as if there were 9 people from Charlbury who were transported, and several more who were sentenced to transportation but who never left British jails.

Carol Richmond is still looking for information on this topic. So I'll make sure she knows if anything useful gets posted here.

Yep, I'll have a go at that and drop copies off at the Church and Museum when done.

I have replied directly to Phil Heeks but others who have posted comments under this heading might like to know that the survey and listing all the gravestones in the Churchyard was completed in 2003.
A copy is held at the museum and another at the Church.
You may also lkie to know that Patrick Serjeant is making a similar survey of the Shorthampton gravestones.
Now, if anyone wants to take on the cemetary. . . .

The curator of the Charlbury Museum, Ron Prew (01608 810060), will know if Gillian completed her survey. As to the Gomms, type "Samuel Gomm" into Google and see what you get!

Ken Parkins write: "Leonard James Turner _ am trying to find out any information on my grandfather. I believe he was in the Royal Navy. My mother (Eileen Turner who lived at Taston; where I was born)thinks he was born in 1881"

If he srved in the RN his service record should be held at The National Archives (TNA) at Kew, look at their web-ste and you'll find lots of research guides, including this one for RN ratings: http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=39
If he was an officer or senior WO/Petty Officer you may find him recorded in the Navy List.

Always work from what you know to what you don't know. You presumably have your mum's birth certificate which will show both parents' names - use this to locate the parents' marriage certificate using the General Register Office (GRO) index of marriages. The marriage certificates may confirm that your Grandfather was in the RN. The GRO indexes can be viewed on fiches at the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies in Bonn Sq, Oxford ('phone up to book a fche reader) - or online at a pay-per-view web-site www.1837online.com

You may find family alive in the 1901 census which can be seen at:
http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
(the index is free to search, you pay to view the images).

Phil,

I am sorry to say that Gillian Naish died a year or two ago. I am not sure if she completed the survey or not. I suggest you write to the Parish Office, St Mary's Church and I expect they would have a copy. If not, why not visit - its a nice place!

Leonard James Turner _ am trying to find out any information on my grandfather. I believe he was in the Royal Navy. My mother (Eileen Turner who lived at Taston; where I was born)thinks he was born in 1881 = probably in Witney and he died in 1926. Any other information would be appreciated.
