Presteigne is rather lovely. (And back in the days when it had a railway, it was the only town in Britain which required three changes to reach London...)

Good on you Jon. I simply refuse to buy any "fresh" food that has been imported from far away places. How can it be fresh?

Yesterday I was in Presteigne, a very small, rather poor and certainly somewhat isolated town in Powys on the English/Welsh borders. I went into a delightfully old fashioned greengrocers, which doubled as a fish shop, and bought some new potatoes.

They were imported from Majorca (sic). Two thousand kilometres.

Today I find that the Charlbury Co-op has three different kinds of new potato, including organic. All from Herefordshire, just a few miles from Presteigne.
