I was wondering who Roly was and what Russell was referring to until I realised I was reading a 13 year old thread! Seems everyone got used to the signs in the end...

Kate S - never a truer word. There actually are signs like that in Aylesbury (or a mile or two outside). The A41 at Waddesdon has the same symbols advertising refreshments, a WC, parking and disabled facilities... only they're for a roadside layby. Admittedly, it's not a historic market layby.

Also, sometimes discussion (even heated) produces results. One persons soapbox rant might actually be an issue that enough people care about, so that something gets changed (or becomes an election issue next time around.....)!!!
As for your comments regarding helicpoters, no-one suggested that they should not be allowed to practise, just that they might do it away from populated areas in the middle of the night!!!
If you would prefer more positive discussion topics, then let's hear your suggestions. While the Charlbury website was down, I did have a look at the Chippy forum, there were some interesting topics being discussed there.

Good post Russel, but what's wrong with people discussing helicopters and signs if they want to? The purpose of a comunity forum is to discuss things that affect people within Charlbury. If the signs were on my way to work say in Aylesbury, no matter how mad I was, I wouldn't 'soap box' it here. But as they are in Charlbury and this is the Charlbury site, why not canvvass opionions and have a good old moan!
On the subject of signs, how could anyone put those huge hideous things up in good faith! It was in a major lapse of judgment and decency in my opinion. And in their pre election campaign leaflets it didn't say "I've been a resident of charlbury for many years, am kind to small animals and old ladies and have a penchant for large signage" or did I read them wrong? ;)
But that aside, for years people have been "dear Sir'ing" to the Times as a way of venting their spleen, it's human nature and it's interesting to see what others think about certain topics!
Yes John, an addition to the signs to read "Argumentative locals" would be good! lol.

Perhaps they should add a soap box symbol to the new signs!

It seems to me that the value of the forum is that, as a result of discussions, information exchange and debate, users find a positive outcome for the issues.

Helicopters, road signs and heresy whilst interesting in a "Heat" like way, don't seem to have much purpose other than people venting their spleen. I find the best approach when I want to climb onto my soapbox is to address my dog, who fortunately for him is now deaf.

Lets have some positive comments like those of Roly

Whilst accepting that the signs are not rustic and probably don't serve the purpose, the town council are generally working in good faith, and they were elected (or could have been). The helicopters are more common these days because they have to do more training before they are shipped out to Basra. No matter your views on the war I'd much rather they had practise here than got shot down in Iraq.

However, I have a solution to the forum issue. That is to suggest that we have a speakers corner outside the Corner House on Saturday mornings, where we can discuss issues with the wider community. This would be more inclusive, as not everone in town uses the website, and perhaps people's views could reach a wider audience.
