A nickname for a sailor (sails=rags), usually bestowed by those of us who like a little extra propulsion in our boats...

What's a raggy, Richard ?? I agree that the canal/river at the Rock of Gibraltar is OK for narrow boats and canoes but not really poss. (surely ?) for sailing boats however small. I think the nearest places for sailing are the lakes at Ducklington and then, further away, the lakes between Lechlade and Fairford.

Of course, you don't have to travel 110 miles to go boating in the Cotswolds... Charlbury is just 9 miles from the Rock of Gibraltar, where there are boating opportunities for all! (Except maybe the raggies. Or anyone with a boat wider than 7ft.)

I agree that the reporting has been very sloppy ... The Guardian article stated that Chipping Norton is not just landlocked (like most places in the UK), but is also a hundred miles from the sea. This seems to have been repeated by everyone who has picked up on the story - in fact the Daily Mail online now has Chippy as 110 miles from the sea! Surely nowhere in the UK is that far inland ... And Chipping Norton is in fact just fifty-odd miles from Bristol.

Oxford Mail?
Why should they look further than charlbury.info?

That's because the BBC website picked it up (presumably via the Oxford Mail?) and as we all know journalists don't do much work themselves, they just find their news on the internet.

Bizarrely, this made the front page of the Guardian website: www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2013/jan/02/chipping-norton-set-yacht-club

If you live in Charlbury (or nearby) and enjoy boating, whether you own a boat or not, then you might be interested to know that a new yacht club has just been formed. The Chipping Norton Yacht Club (www.cnyc.co.uk) was launched today and the first meeting will be held in a few weeks. Check out the website for full details.

Happy New Year.
