FB reports just about anything, it's a major rumour mill. If it was a major gas explosion, reports would be coming in from north Cheshire, as it is nothing is north of Rugby and the MOD wouldn't have been looking into it. I think anyway the BBC have confirmed my post (which came from a military person)

Geoff's right, quote from another forum.

Two Typhoons from Coningsby were launched on a QRA to an unknown light aircraft in the East Somerset area and were "cleared" to go supersonic by blackdog (CRC) to get there quickly...
Going supersonic is not allowed over land in the UK except in these circumstances. The Typhoons are now refuelling over mid Wales with the VC10 which was "scrambled" out of Brize Norton

Breaking news Huge mystery boom heard over county - big bang theory!

6:48pm Thursday 12th April 2012 in News By Amanda Williams

POLICE have been inundated with calls about loud bang, believed to be a series of sonic booms.

Fire crews are also investigating the source of the noise and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue are liaising with neighbouring counties.

Thames Valley Police duty inspector Phil Rogers said people have reported the noise, from Chipping Norton, Burford, Banbury and North Newington, right out to Swindon and Warwick.

He said: "There have been no reports of any casualties or damage.

"We believe it could be a sonic boom from a supersonic aircraft."

We heard no planes, but this makes it more likely it was a meteorite
