Asking Google the question "Why is Charlbury not in the Domesday Book" yielded the following from Mister A. Eye:

Charlbury is not mentioned by name in the Domesday Book because its estate was included within the large fifty-hide estate of Banbury, owned by the Bishop of Lincoln.
Key reasons for the omission include:
• Conflation with Banbury: Historians believe Charlbury's data was grouped inside the entry for Banbury as part of the church lands of ancient standing.
• Detached Portion of the Hundred: Charlbury functioned as a detached part of the Banbury hundred rather than being surveyed as an independent manor in its own right.
• Incomplete Survey Nature: The Domesday Book is not a complete list of every settlement in 1086-1087, and several ecclesiastical estates or smaller member-settlements were absorbed under larger parent manors.

How true any of this is I do not know!

According to https://opendomesday.org/ there is no record of Charlbury in the Domesday Book. I don't know how authoritative that website is but it's a good place to start.

Having listened to some excellent online talks provided by the National Archives, about 1066 and its aftermath I have borrowed a translation of the Domesday Book from our local library.

I was hoping to find an entry for Charlbury, but I can't. There are entries for Wychwood, Wootton, Woodstock, and Bampton, but Charlbury seems to be missing. Do any of you know if there is an entry?  If so, perhaps you can point me in the right direction? The Domesday Book is rather large!
