Copper connection between phones and the street

BT is retiring the traditional analogue copper landline network (PSTN = Public Switched Telephone Network ), and this is being switched off across the UK by 31 January 2027.

In our area, I think the choice is between BT (for landlines) and Gigaclear which offers a digital Home Phone service running via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over its full-fibre broadband network. There are other operators (including Sky), but any BT Customer who doesn't make the switch by the close of January 2027  is likely to lose their landline telephone number. Talk Talk (being bought by BT) does, however, claim that the switch-over won't affect many of its customers. See here.

BT customers need to tell BT if any of these apply: (i) you have a care alarm, health pendant, security alarm or other connected device that uses the telephone line; (ii) you have a disability or any other needs that mean you need extra help with the installation; or (iii) you don’t own a mobile phone, or you don't have enough mobile signal at home to call the emergency services.

I have already been digitised by BT (who provided the broadband router and backup battery for free), but have yet to be provided with full-fibre to the premises (FFTP) which is a high-speed broadband connection that runs fibre-optic cables directly into one's home.

The facilities for completing FFTP are set up on the nearby telegraph pole, and FFTP will come into my house via an overhead wire, once the connection is established. Other houses in Charlbury will be connected via underground wiring. Has your neighbour perhaps confused the process of digitisation with the changeover to FFTP? I suggest she phones BT very soon, and they should be able to advise and help with the process of digitisation.

Yes, I still have my copper landline in Lee Close. I have been with Talk Talk for about 6 -7

years and have never had any problems. Reasonable price for broadband and phone line.

I've been asked to post this by my next door neighbour, Alison Dowley, who doesn't have internet access:

"Has anyone managed to keep their copper landline? If so, which company? I've been told it's possible with Utility Warehouse - but they seem to get poor reviews. Please let me know ASAP

Thanks.

Please phone me (Alison) on 01608 810188"
