Be cautious about unexpected phone calls

This is a warning about a telephone scam that has approached several people I know locally, one of whom temporarily lost £10,000 (and has so far fortunately recovered half of that). The scam consists of a fairly convincing phone call from someone claiming to be from a London police station and investigating a crime affecting several people in the “Chipping Norton area”. The caller claims he is a detective investigating a number credit card abuses in our area. After some exchanges, the call is designed to request the recipient to reveal bank or credit card details, which are then immediately exploited.
