Thanks to everyone who organised the film. I just sent an email to Sean Woodcock asking him to make the issue a rallying cry.

I didn't make this point on the evening but I think another key action is to lobby the mainstream media to talk regularly about the extreme and upsetting consequences of climate change. They are the ones who can put the facts out there.

I was pleased to attend the briefing and to see so many there last night, but must note that the urgency extends much to adapting to the future climate.

Working in the field of climate resilience for over 20 years and seeing the impacts and understanding the science, the world is on course for more rapid climate change than projected even a few years ago. Global heating will continue despite reduced emissions.

As a consequence, society needs to become more resilient to climate hazards, from extreme rainfall and flooding to heatwaves and wildfires. This is climate adaptation and includes small things we can do, for example closing curtains to cool our homes on hot days, to big corporates and governments pushing for investment in resilience for vital services like energy, transport, education and hospitals, food chain and communications.

Many thanks to Claire, Tim, Liz, Brigid and all who enabled the screening last night of the People's Emergency Briefing. The threat of partial or complete societal collapse in the coming decades is very real and the consequences would be horrific.

The message I took home is that the UK urgently needs to prioritise its Net Zero policy and move faster to reduce CO2 emissions. UK has Net Zero policy by 2050 but slow implementation. I would be interested to learn more about what the UK Government has achieved over the past 5 years and what it has committed to do in the coming 1, 2, 3 years.

Meanwhile the UK's role in promoting Net Zero on the global stage is also important. The Paris Agreement (2015) was a step forward but inadequate as no agreed date for Net Zero, no binding targets for individual countries, and no explicit requirement to phase out fossil fuels. Meanwhile global CO2 emissions continue to increase.

A speech today by Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, 11 June 2026 at the launch of WHO's new guidance to protect lives from extreme heat

https://www.who.int/europe/news/item/11-06-2026-statement---europe-lost-200-000-people-to-heat-in-4-years-yet-nearly-all-of-them-were-preventable

'The impacts of climate change are a clear and present danger, and its most immediate and lethal manifestation is extreme heat. Heatwaves are no longer freak weather anomalies. They are now a recurring crisis inflicting suffering, claiming lives and fracturing our health systems and infrastructure. Over just the past 4 years, heat has claimed more than 200 000 lives across the EU and its associated countries... this is just the tip of the iceberg, with millions more people being affected physically and mentally...'

Tim, can we get tickets on the door on Friday, or best to book in advance? If the latter, can you share the link again so it's at the top of this thread? Thanks!

Tonights screening remains sold out. We can however offer standing room and/or seating in the Garden Room with restricted views. There is always the possibility of some no-shows (the ticket platform suggests an average of 10-12%).

Friday evenings screening is also selling very well but there are still tickets availble.

Here are a few reactions from the public about the film who have attended screenings in other parts of the country:

"It's not abstract. It's not party political. And most importantly it's not bleak.... I am so filled with hope after seeing just how many events have been lined up across the country." Paul Riley, LinkedIn

From the moment of arrival, it was an immersive participatory experience where everyone seemed keen to embrace the moment, to connect, and to inspire one another" Sylvia Davies, LinkedIn

I'll be honest- I'm  sceptical of climate doom-mongering.... But this film is different, really different. Stark facts, yes. But also a genuine sense of agency and even optimism.... if you get the chance to attend a screening, I'd strongly encourage it." Peter, Harker, LinkedIn

Looks like the Peoples Emergency Briefing has become the hottest ticket in May EVER as the screening has just sold out - 130 tickets!

We have however been able to arrange a second screening the following night, same venue, timings and booking details etc. If you couldn't get a ticket for Thursday hopefully the new screening on Friday will turn the disappointment into something of a relief...

Thanks Clare for starting this thread and brilliant that SusCha is hosting the People's emergency briefing - will be (literally) a hot ticket! Agree with others on this thread that it would be great if we can have the Town Council update on their efforts on climate and nature and more widely linked to the powerful community meeting held in 2019. Also to flag that there is another interesting link to the National Conversation happening x UK now - take the survey here and perhaps following this there may be further appetite to discuss more about the kind of community and country we all want to be part of: https://www.thenationalconversation.org.uk/

Wow Neil that is huge.

I went to the town council meeting last night to invite them to the event on the 11th at Memorial Hall. They seemed supportive and I am hoping they will come and can help us come together on what we can do collectively and how we help each other cope with these extremes

The heat will be bothering a lot of people. I remember in Delhi we found shading windows had a huge impact on how hot a house got.

After the town council called an emergency in 2019, I remember we had that great workshop where we discussed what we could do together and formed working groups. Covid disrupted a lot of that. Although I heard the land and nature group is still working away. Maybe we need an another dialogue about how we can work together to be resilient to these climate impacts & help our community thrive into the future?

I follow a news service called Health Policy Watch and it has published an alarming article today

Global Temperatures Head For Record Highs in Next Five Years

Global average temperatures are likely to reach record levels in the coming five years, the latest report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns...

The WMO’s report suggests that such brutal summers will become the norm in the near future...

Andy Graham from WODC has been invited and agree it would be good to get feedback from that meeting.

The screening is not available to download, but there are other screenings taking place in Oxfordshire - FarmED and one in Chipping Norton plus others - if you can't make the Charlbury one take a look at the nationwide screening map to find another screening visit https://www.nebriefing.org/screening-map

I think it was last year that WODC executive held their meeting in the Community Centre and afterwards there was a group discussion between councillors, an officer tasked with planning and the residents who were there about the need to prepare for climate breakdown at the local level.

It would be good to have some feedback to the town on where this work has got to and what it is focusing on.  Has it become a part of a district emergency plan?  Are first responders, medics, police and fire services involved?  etc. etc.   There were lots of good points raised.   I'm away on the 11th - presumably I can download it from somewhere?

With heat waves happening more often and with greater intensity, local resilience to mitigate against the impacts of our warming climate is going to become an important conversation for health, nature and food production etc. The Town Council have declared a climate emergency .... are any councillors attending this event, it would be great to find out what plans are being implemented locally?

Hope you are all managing to stay cool...

... it feels timely that Sustainable Charlbury are hosting the People's Emergency Briefing at the Memorial Hall on 11th June! Looking forward to connecting locally on these issues - https://www.charlbury.info/events/10890
