.. is how AE Housman described Ode 7 in Book 4 of Horace's Odes.

For the first of our series of Morris Room talks, I'll be looking at that poem (in translation, with just a brief foray into the original text), as an example of

  • how Latin poetry works, including how it's technically different from English rhythm & metres;
  • the role that Horace's poetry has played in English culture down the centuries;
  • and how it has been, and might best today be, translated into English verse.

Come & join us for an hour or so next Tuesday (14th) at 7.00 pm in the Morris Room (the upstairs front room in the Corner House);  refreshments from 6.30 pm;  entry free, donations invited.

These talks are intended as an opportunity for us as Charlbury residents to share our interests & enthusiasms with one another.  Subjects in the next few months will include Alma Mahler, Amazonian tribes, Maps & map-making, Lowland Rescue.  What would you like to share with your friends & neighbours:  contact me on john@pjohnp.me.uk and we can arrange it?
