Stanton Harcourt Recycling

The Shipston site is very like our own long lamented Dean Pit. If that were still open, things could be different but alas, in spite of a long and vigorous campaign to keep it open, it was closed over a decade ago.

Well done Liz Leffman - you are brilliant at sharing the facts.

Not an easy job, managing multiple people's expectations.....

Thank you for all that you do for Charlbury and thanks for being who you are and your resilience and persistence over many years. Well done you.

They could, at least, allow those travelling from places like Charlbury a longer time than the permitted 15 minutes booking slot. In my (tiny) car I need to allow 40 minutes to be (relatively) sure of getting to Stanton Harcourt in time.

Redbridge is about the same driving time, but the traffic is more unpredictable, and Ardley Fields and Alkerton are slightly further away.

Shipston-on-Stour tip in Warwickshire is the nearest to my house by far. Gloucestershire residents (passenger cars without trailers only) were permitted to use the Shipston site even before the 6-months window was introduced. Why can't WODC come to a similar arrangement?

This has been introduced for two reasons. The first is that the facility at Redbridge has to close as it is in serious need of renovation and while it is closed that will displace people towards the other sites so a booking system is needed to avoid long queues. The second reason is that nearby counties have a booking system and require Oxfordshire residents to pay to use their sites,  so we need a reciprocal system. Without that, residents from other counties can  bring their rubbish to us to recycle at a cost to local taxpayers. However, I notice that Warwickshire has suspended their booking system for a period of six months from November to see what happens, so we may have an opportunity to re-evaluate this once Redbridge reopens.

This pre booking concept an utterly ridiculous idea for a recycling centre. When taking items from my house to the tip for recycling, why on earth should I have to use the internet beforehand to make a booking? Presumably the slots will be generally available in the weekdays, when most people are working, and scarce during the weekends.

What was lacking about the previous service?  Now someone stands sentry to the site, blocking entry with a chain like some hiviz bouncer.  “Your name’s not down mate” I can imagine them saying “you’re not coming in”.

What value does this add for householders?  I was given a handful of cards by the chap so I could do the communication to neighbours.

I was passing Ardley the other day so made a booking. You have to give car registration number, name and address, and pick a 15 minute window - too short if you are travelling far.

When arriving there was a chap asking for my car reg no. Is he blind I thought. Then I had to give my address which he had on his iPad anyway. Then he asked for a proof of address. I lost it there and asked if he was German.

Whoever designed this system needs to arrive in the 21 century. Eliminate the cost of manual checks and interrogation with anpr. Job done.

Warwickshire has introduced an experimental scheme for six months from 24 November which means no booking is required. It applies to cars, but not to  vans, pick-ups, trailers or large 4x4s. www.warwickshire.gov.uk/recyclingshipston

I think that means that waste can be taken to Shipston for the time being, as well as to any other of the sites in Warwickshire.

Let's hope the scheme gets extended. Getting to Shipston is much easier than the drive to Stanton Harcourt, and I was really sorry that access to Warwickshire waste sites was withdrawn during Covid.

You have now to book an appointment via Oxford County Council. website.........."household waste recycling centre" , also to show proof of Oxfordshire residency at the site.  One can no longer go to Shipston on Stour.

You must log in before you can post a reply.
