"Nottingham knockers" refers to door-to-door salespeople who sell low-quality household products at inflated prices. They use aggressive tactics and may claim to be ex-offenders on a rehabilitation course, sometimes showing fake ID cards. The term originated from the Nottingham area, though the practice can occur anywhere, and some callers may be scouting properties for future theft.

Key characteristics

Door-to-door selling: They go to homes, often in groups, carrying household goods they claim to sell.

Aggressive sales tactics: They use pressure to make sales.

False credentials: They may show fake ID cards or claim to be part of a rehabilitation program, which is not true.

Poor quality products: They offer items of low quality for high prices.

Potential for criminal activity: Some may be using the sales visit as a way to identify homes for burglary.

What to do if you encounter a Nottingham Knocker

Do not open the door: If you are not expecting a caller, do not open the door.

Do not buy anything: Politely refuse any offers, even if you feel pressured.

Do not hand over cash: It is a dangerous practice and can be used to gather information.

Call the police if you feel threatened: Close the door and contact the police immediately. For emergencies, dial 999. For non-emergencies, call 101, say West Mercia Police {https://www.westmercia.police.uk/news/west-mercia/news/2022/october/beware-of-nottingham-knockers-selling-items-door-to-door}.

Inform your neighbours: Talk to your neighbours, especially elderly or vulnerable ones, and warn them about this scam.

On a serious note it sounds like a scam to me. Thanks for letting the forum know.

I do think it’s cause for concern, he has a homemade ID card and claims to be on a government scheme.

A door to door salesman in Crawborough: pleasant enough but just raising awareness as I know they are sometimes thought to be cause for concern.
