Jane Goodall was such an inspiration to me and to hundreds of thousands of others. I had the great good fortune to meet her about 20 years ago when she came to deliver a lecture and plant a tree at a university in Canada where I was a visiting faculty member, and she was so wise, generous and humble in what she said and did, and how she communicated with everyone, particularly about her amazing Roots and Shoots programme. A very sad day for the world, losing such a remarkable, gentle yet effective leader. We need many more Jane Goodall's to rise up and counter the prevailing trends of anger and aggression.

If you have never read any of her work, then do have a look at the book she wrote with Douglas Abrams, The Book of Hope
