Thu 28 Aug, 13:00 Running an honesty-box system is great - we don't have to staff the bookshop in the Corner House - but there are disadvantages. It means that we can't (or daren't!) sell more expensive books, and it means that we can't sell books where some of the proceeds are due to someone else (which is how I do most of my other bookselling - on commission for other people). All our more expensive books (£5+) are on AbeBooks (here), under the seller name "April House Books". The Corner House gets some money from everything sold there. But that still leaves many other books that for various reasons are neither on Abe nor in the Corner House, and I'm gradually listing them separately online, initially in three categories. Local-Interest Books (listed here) have proved very popular. The list, of books about Charlbury & neighbourhood, is regularly refreshed, and all titles are cheaper than anywhere else on the internet - let me know if you find one that isn't! Theological Books (here) are gradually being uploaded. A bit niche, I know, but it's my own academic background and I have some excellent sources as all my cleverer friends who became professors etc are now retiring and asking me to sell their libraries. Poetry Books (here) will be fun to browse when I've uploaded a few (hundred) more. There's just one there at the moment, as a gesture of intent -- but why not bookmark the page? All books are cheaper than anywhere else online, and some (often a lot, depending on where the book came from) of the proceeds are passed to the Corner House and other local charities. |
