I support the flying of the Ukraine flag from the Corner House flagstaff. However, as a former army officer, I know it is right to fly the Union flag to mark VJ Day. What makes me so happy is how the momentum for flying the Union Flag has come from the community. Yet more proof that Charlbury is one of the best Towns in the UK.

We're going to fly the Union flag at the Corner House on VJ Day - a sensible suggestion, gladly received.

Fly all the flags of every nation in the world.

Would save on bunting for the Street Fair. ;-)

Hopefully a sensible compromise can be found. Fly the Ukrainian flag whilst Vance is around after he rudely dissed the war hero Zelensky at the White House earlier this year. Fly the Union flag to honour our servicemen on August 15th, who fought the same brave fight for freedom and democracy 80 years ago. Or just fly both flags?

All I requested was for the Union Flag to fly on the Corner House, as it always did on  these occasions.

What past politics and "our" guest have to do with remembering those who gave their lives in WW2 I fail to see ,just  being  patriotic here!  John H

There's an absolutely perfect joint Union/Ukrainian flag flying outside the house next door to the archway that used to lead to the White Horse.

In Market St. The house that always used to have a Conservative poster up.

You see, my dears, once upon a time this Town, though briefly, had a Conservative MP. And a Conservative County Councillor.  And  a Conservative District Councillor.  Try telling that to the police, Secret Service and CIA agents and journalists who now infest the Town.

They wouldn't believe it.

In view of the conflict that ended in 1945 and the other conflict that is ongoing now that was initiated against an innocent country by an aggressor who our "guest" appears to support (at least partly), could consideration be given to flying the union flag above the Ukrainian flag on that day, signifying tribute and remembrance for all those who made the ultimate sacrifice defending freedom back then ... and to show support to all those in Ukraine who are doing the same now?

This might be off-topic, but I thought this little bit of history was an interesting lesson on the huge symbolic power of flags:

The Bremen Six – How a Gang of New York Troublemakers Struck America’s First Blow Against Hitler
LATE IN THE evening of July 26, 1935, two-and-a-half years into Adolf Hitler’s reign and more than four years before the start of World War Two, a small band of unlikely protagonists delivered the first international blow against the Third Reich.

Whilst we deplore current world events this was a simple request to commemorate VJ Day by flying the Union Flag on the 15th August to show respect for all those around the world who did not come home

With the greatest respect, John, I disagree with you. The Union flag, like VJ Day itself,  doesn't just represent Britain's (and its allies') victory over Japan but our collective victory for some fundamental principles.

Especially at a time when those principles are opposed by someone staying in our midst, the Ukrainian flag stands for exactly the principles the Union flag stands for. Sadly, our guest may disagree with those principles, which is why it's especially important to fly the Ukrainian flag - which shows the world we most certainly don't.

Well said John. Although it should be flown as a matter of course and along side other flags.  Not just for VJ day Let's show respect.

Can we please replace the flag on the Corner House with a more appropriate  Union flag,to commemorate VJ day on the 15th of this month please?
