Low level humming

The most likely culprits are the power transformers - the sub-stations - that are dotted around the town. They do produce a low-frequency hum that you may or may not hear (wherever you are in town) depending on the wind direction at the time.

I think it's more of a whine. It can be regularly heard in and around Charlbury.

Is anyone hearing a low hum? Seems worse at night and it seems not everyone can hear it.

Perhaps you should get other people to listen with you, at the same time? Or try listening in other places?

Well, the noise is still around after the festival. I checked once a while back in the late evening and could hear it outside, but haven't been able to confirm this since (picking the wrong time to try to hear a low-level noise). If I do hear it outside, then what's my next step to getting it identified? The council?

Can you estimate what frequency the hum is at? Usually these things are eliminated from being the dread HUM by som, ething banal in the building like power supplies buzzing at some resonance of 50hz, fluorescent lights ditto, ,water turbulence in heating systems resonating with the pipe and house structure resonances, and so forth. The article did find real experiences of people hearing a noise when most alternative explanations had been exhausted, but mostly they were found out to be innoccuos in origin.

So, seriously ... I don't recall hearing this hum before Thursday night, which makes me think it might be related to Cornbury Festival. Generators or something. I hope it goes away after Tuesday, and if not, then I'll be having to make enquiries with the council. It's starting to really get on my nerves -- I sure hope it isn't something permanent.

There are a lot of people hearing "The Hum" around the country and it has been the subject of some news articles and I seem to recall a mention of it in New Scientist, and seems distributed locally around the whole country. Some people hear it, some don't. Check it out on a google (or ----- or whatever as it doesn't plant google's surveillance cookies on your 'pooter). How close are you to a power transformer dropping voltage to 240 and splitting up the phases to houses? They commonly hum at 50hz and perhaps your new extension jealousy is acting as a resonator in some way...

Completely inappropriate link removed. Please, take the five seconds to check that you are not directing people to, ahem, a porn site before posting some link that you half remember. Thank you. --Richard

I don't know ... it's *constant* and has been going on for 24 hours now. It's like a very deep buzz or hum. Last night, there seemed to be no breaks in the noise at all, whereas today there was more of a buzzzzzzzz buzz buzzzzzzzzz to it.

Anyone notice an incessant low level, deep humming lately? I started noticing it on Wednesday night, and then all day today. First, I thought it was my ears, but someone else heard it, too. Then I thought it was my plumbing or my fish tanks or my refrigerator, but when I went outside to bring the laundry in, I could hear it outside, too.

Suggestions? Theories?
