The Wonder that was Syria

Denise Derbyshire

Denise is a lecturer with the Ashmolean. In addition she has given many talks to private groups for nearly 30 years, participating in Day Schools and courses on a wide range of subjects linked to her work at the Ashmolean including: Islamic Art and Architecture, the Minoans, Indian Art, Religion and Culture, Syria from Bronze Age to c.1500AD, and has worked on major exhibitions, her latest being Imagining the Divine – a collaboration between the Ashmolean and the British Museum.

A particular joy was collaborating with the National Museum of Damascus. She has travelled widely in India, Eastern Mediterranean and Syria, including living with a Syrian Bedouin family beside the Euphrates. Many of the slides shown to-day have been taken personally. Sadly, some of which you will see no longer exists.
