Basil Eastwood studied Arabic and Turkish at Oxford and served as British Ambassador to Syria and to Switzerland after a 38-year career focussed mainly on the Middle East and Europe. 

After retirement he worked as a consultant for the Foreign Office on Arabic extremist websites and for three years was a member of an unofficial group talking to senior Islamist figures from the Middle East.
