We know much about Turner and Constable, whose work dominated the first half of the 19th century. But in what way did they develop from a genre that had once been considered a lesser kind of subject matter? 

 From its classical origins in the Baroque painters in Rome, through to the colourful dynamism of Hockney in Yorkshire, the lecture follows the progress of England's great achievements in landscape painting.
