Thu 7 Jan 2027: Charlbury Society talk with Deborah Hayter
The Lost Villages of Oxfordshire
Deborah Hayter is a landscape historian looking to answer the question 'Why do places look like they do?'
Everyone knows something about deserted medieval villages – locals will generally say it was the plague or because of sheep – but what really happened to them and why did they disappear?
The Black Death caused the population to crash everywhere, but some places were vulnerable while others survived, some were deliberately destroyed and some just gradually dwindled away through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
In this talk Deborah will do her best to separate fact from folklore.
This talk will be held on Zoom, starting at 7.30pm. It is free for members, who will be sent a link in advance. Visitors are welcome to join the talk for a fee of £3. Contact treas.charlsoc@gmail.com for payment details.
