Tue 24 Mar: What really matters

This is the last in a series of talks for Lent held in St Mary's parish church on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. The theme of the talks is 'moved by love'.

The speaker is the Rev. Dr Elizabeth Koepping. She trained in Social Anthropology and later in Theology, She taught anthropology at universities in Australia and Germany, and then World Christianity at Edinburgh until retiring in 2014, after which she returned to Germany as Chaplain to the English Church in Heidelberg. In 2016 she settled in Charlbury and is a member of the ministry team at Charlbury parish church. Her main area of research since 1966/70 has been among village people in Borneo.

This illustrated talk will look at two aspects of community: as a collection of people who are linked to each other only to the extent each wishes, or an intentional community of people pledged to follow a particular practices coming from a shared world view. The substance of the talk comes from a book Elizabeth is currently writing for the people of the Borneo village to which she has been attached for sixty years to document their history. This has changed over the last century from a close knit group in which behaviour was tightly controlled to more of a loose collection of individuals. Yet it remains a community, and though some regret the loss of the integrated past, others recognise the downside. It will give us a chance to consider what we mean by community and how we experience community life today.

Doors open at 7pm. Admission free. Donations will be welcome towards expenses and for Christian Aid. Everyone is welcome.
