Tue 17 Mar: What really matters
This is the fourth in a series of talks for Lent held in St Mary's parish church on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. The theme of the talks is 'moved by love'.
The speaker on 17 March is Patrick Derham. Patrick is known in Charlbury as an enthusiastic advocate for education and as 'quizmaster extraordinaire' for quiz evenings held in St Mary's.
Patrick was a History teacher before becoming Head Master of Solihull School (1996), Rugby School (2001) and Westminster School (2014).
His own life was transformed by educational opportunity and passionate about widening access, Patrick set up the Arnold Foundation for Rugby School, which provides a boarding education at Rugby to disadvantaged children and was instrumental in setting up the Royal National Children's Spring Board Foundation, a national charity closely modelled on the Arnold Foundation.
In his "second career" he is involved in a number of projects including working with Crucible in Sub-Saharan Africa and The Alsama Project based in the Shatila Refugee Camp in Beirut. He is quoted by Alsama as saying: "Of all the projects that I have been involved with, this is the one that has the potential to make the greatest difference".
His talk will be a reflection on the transformational power of education.
Doors open at 7pm. Admission free. Donations will be welcome towards expenses and for Christian Aid. Everyone is welcome.
