Why Walls Matter:
Exploring wallpaper in the eighteenth-century home
A talk by Clare Taylor
Clare’s talk will shine a light on the patterns, styles and methods used to produce wallpaper during the eighteenth century, a period when its use became widespread in Britain.
She will explore block printed and flocked wallpapers, as well as hand painted wallpapers imported from Asia.
The talk will combine evidence from letters and bills with examples of surviving fragments of wallpaper and the houses where it was hung.
Clare is Professor of Art History and Material Cultures at The Open University. She is the author of The Design, Production and Consumption of Eighteenth-Century Wallpaper in Britain (Routledge, 2018).
Clare is a specialist in the historic interior and has recently been a Visting Research Fellow at the V&A where she has been working on the Museum’s wallpaper collection.
