ART AND ILLUSION
John Bennett will talk about some of the ways in which we can look at art taking inspiration from Gombrich's seminal work Art and Illusion.
The talk will look at optical illusions to note the importance of cognition in the act of seeing. This will then provide an excuse for a tour through the history of European painting and sculpture to see how Gombrich's ideas might illuminate art history, and to see how a range of artists have dealt with the perennial conundrum of presenting a three dimensional world on a two dimensional surface.
