I was struck by this idea, especially with the proximity of the Norfolk Broads and the possibility of hiring a boat.

I know Norwich - knew anyway in the early 80s - quite well, but never made it to the Norfolk coast. I had no idea there were nice sandy beaches there! I thought it was all muddy rivery inlets and estuaries like further south.

Perhaps next year. Yesterday Janet struck lucky with a last minute cancellation near Coverack of a farmhouse cottage, close to where the kids' cousins are also on hols this year, so we're off there at half price. A silver lining in every cloud, eh? Wish us good luck for the weather from next Friday.

If you want to have the sea included, how about the Norfolk coast? Fairly flat so easy if you have an injury and many villages are right by the beach - all the way from Hunstanton , through Wells, Sheringham, Overstrand, Bacton, Happisburgh. Close and not difficult to get to.

On the south coast there's Bosham and Chidham which don't get quite so crowded as the main centres.

The Lake District, unless you know your way around and the back roads there, you can get stuck in a lot of traffic in August. If you want the Lakes, stay on the east, one of the small villages near Ullswater - Dockray, Howton, Pooley Bridge; and avoid Bowness and Windermere and also Grasmere. Instead of going to the National Park, stay just outside, The Cartmel Peninsula (maybe Cark, Lindale or Field Broughton)and Arnside (busy at weekends)or the Furness Peninsula or Ravenglass.

We're floundering this year, what with the move left it late to arrange. We've also realised that the 3yr old - who's a stocky little chap - is getting too heavy for Dad with a nastily injured spine to push up hills in the (very well battered) 3 wheel buggy, which with another adult on a tow rope at the front has left us undefeated the last couple of years (and with his much older sister when she was little herself some 5 years back, but I was in better nick then!).

So, where to go? Our retreat to hilly hills won't work for a couple of years. We don't like hustle and bustle, but a small town with a pub suitable for kids or a (preferably veggie) eating place would be possibly sensible so things are on the doorstep. We don't like having to drive everywhere all the time!

Anyone know of any nice Hotels which aren't "posh" but homely and "affordable" where we can not worry about catering? Near to beach so we don't have to start the car every day would be nice, but kids might like proper mountains if there are good valley walks and moderate slopes up to some views?

Any guesthouses? Nice B&B that would enable us to hang about a bit if weather isn't good?

Just wondering what people have discovered over the years. West Country, but perhaps the Lakes or similar (we've only been there once so don't know the area at all, tho' it can get full in August by all accounts). Or somewhere Wales or anywhere we've missed that can be nice?

Jus' wunnering...
