Thank you from Cornerstone

An enormous thank you to everyone who donated Easter Eggs to Cornerstone so that we could send these out with our food bags last Friday. We had a brilliant response and had plenty to go to all households.

Thank you also to Coop for another trolley full of food for use in the food bags - all of this was used up on Friday.

Charlbury Museum is 75 years old!

2024 marks 75 years since the founding of Charlbury Museum. In March 1949 an historical exhibition was held in the Corner House featuring many items loaned by the people of Charlbury. It was a resounding success and led to the formation of the Charlbury Society.  Many of the exhibits formed the basis of the museum collection.

The museum reopens on Easter Saturday. It could not function without the many volunteers who kindly offer their time to steward whenever the museum is open. A huge thank you to you all. We are immensely grateful for the time you give to welcome visitors and point out our current exhibition and other items on display.

We are always looking for new stewards to join us. It is not a big commitment, and stewards can choose how many or how few two-hour sessions to do in a season – every little helps. It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet people and to learn more about the history of the town.

Please do think about offering a few hours each year to keep the museum open and share the history of the town with residents and visitors alike. If you are interested, please email info@charlburymuseum.org.uk or pop a note through the museum door.  Thank you.

PS Keep an eye out for our next posting about this year’s exhibition. It commemorates the centenary of the tragedy in 1924 when three children drowned in the Evenlode while beating the bounds of the parish.

Reminder to order repeat prescriptions before Easter.

The Charlbury Medical Centre will be closed on Good Friday, 29 March and Easter Monday, 1 April.  Please ensure that you order repeat prescriptions so you do not run out as we approach the bank holiday weekend. It usually takes four days to process a request.  The NHS App and Patient Access is the quickest, cheapest and most efficient way to do this.

Witney Pharmacy, Windrush Health Centre, Welch Way, Witney, OX28 6JS. Tel: 01993 705644 will be open on 29, 31 March and 1 April from 2pm until 5pm. Check details on the NHS website: Oxfordshire Pharmacy Opening Times Easter 2024.

The phones are always very busy after a bank holiday weekend. Please only call the surgery between 8am and 9:30am if you have an urgent need to speak to a clinician on the same day.  If it is safe to do so, please call later in the day, or wait until the following day.  The practice will be very grateful for your help.

Speedwatch device vandalised

Dear Charlbury Residents,

It has come to our attention that the Speed Indication Device (SID) located on

Grammar School Hill was unfortunately vandalized. This regrettable act of

vandalism necessitated the removal of the SID for repairs, rendering it out of

action for just over a week.

We understand the importance of the SID in promoting road safety and its role in

alerting drivers to their speed as they drive through our town. The absence of

this device may have caused concern among residents who value the safety

measures it provides.

We are, however, pleased to inform you that the SID is now back up and running.

It has been relocated to The Slade, on the Dancers Hill side, where it will continue

to serve its purpose of enhancing road safety.

Both SIDs, along with the tireless efforts of our volunteer, are invaluable assets to

Charlbury. The dedication and hard work behind the scenes ensure that these

devices are deployed and maintained, contributing significantly to the well-being

of our community.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude for your

support. It is the community's collective effort that makes Charlbury a safer place

for everyone. Let us continue to stand together against such acts of vandalism

and show our appreciation for the volunteer who works diligently to keep our

roads safe.

Thank you once again for your understanding and continued support.

Warm regards,

CSW TEAM

Your Corner House needs you!

It’s hard to believe it, but it’s now nearly three years since the new charity was formed to manage and look after The Corner House and the Memorial Hall on behalf of everyone in town.  In that time, the trustee group has not only fulfilled these obligations on a day-to-day basis, but has also worked hard on developing plans that will make sure that these much-loved buildings will be fit for use well into the future.

These plans include improving accessibility to and inside The Corner House;  reducing the buildings’ carbon footprint;  making The Corner House warmer and more welcoming;  and last (but no means least) installing some new loos in The Corner House too.

The trustees are now working on getting planning approval for all of this, which involves ensuring that we achieve the right balance between heritage and usability.  And that’s not easy – which is why we need at least another three people to join the trustee group to help drive this important project forward.  To put it simply, there’s too much involved for the current group to handle on their own.  The Corner House and the Memorial Hall are at the heart of our community, and we need your help to keep them there.

We are not insisting on people having a technical background, or anything like that – just an appreciation of how important these buildings are to us all.  And, with the Secretary due to retire later this year, we will need someone who can take over that important role for us.

It will be an exciting time once we can begin the work that we feel is essential to make The Corner House an even better community hub for the future.  Please help us to achieve that by joining the trustees.  Contact us at charlburycornerhouse@outlook.com as a first step, or leave us a note in the mailbox in The Corner House foyer.

Firewalking for Girl Guides

On 15 March, Jody and Angela, two Very Brave Parents of two of our Girl Guides, are walking BAREFOOT over 20 feet of fire to raise funds for the Charlbury Girl Guides unit. Please donate to help us blaze a trail to success!

You may know Jody and Angela from around town - both are super lovely ladies and contribute a lot to Charlbury being a fabulous place. They've gone one step further here (pun intended) and are participating in a SIX-METRE walk over burning coals.

They're doing this for a few reasons: 1) They're a bit mad; 2) They need a hobby; 3) They're very, very brave; and 4) They're helping to raise money for the Charlbury Girl Guides!

If you would like to support their madness/fundraising efforts, please click on our link here to donate!

https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/charlbury-girl-guides

Girl Guides is open to all girls between the ages of 10 and 14, and there's so much to do and learn! Any donation you make here (whether large or small) will go directly to our unit to help us fund all these activities, and more, for our Girl Guides!

We'll also be at the Farmer's Market this coming Saturday collecting donations there, too!

Thank you for supporting Charlbury Girl Guides!
