Fri 21 Sep 2018: “Should it be a crime to rescue refugees?” — a talk by Frances Webber
This event is in the past.
How volunteers who rescue people fleeing violence and death are being turned into criminals while the refugees are left to die.
European member states subject those who rescue refugees to criminal investigation, impound boats, turn away boats full of vulnerable rescued people … how does this square with international duties of rescue, and with Europe's Enlightenment values?
Human rights lawyer Frances Webber, CRAG member and vice-chair of the Institute of Race Relations, kicks off the discussion with a description of recent developments in the criminalisation of solidarity actions in Europe.
Come to CRAG's discussion meeting on Friday 21 September at 8pm in Friends' House, Market Street, Charlbury. Admission free, all welcome.
